Cakes won't fruit - H E L P
    #1364461 - 03/11/03 03:05 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

this is my "friend's" second batch that is only producing 1-2 fruits...
temp is anwhere from 71(darkness) to 75 when light is on
using perlite, humidity appears to be at or below 100% - condensation all over the walls
cakes were coldshocked, some twice, some dunked/shocked
cakes get anywhere between 2-6 hrs of 60watt incadescent light
cakes are PF style brown rice and vermiculite, colonization went just fine at normal speed.

this current batch produced 3 fruits on one cake, all very small, one is now an abort(great :frown:) and the other two are very small and skinnny... strain is huatla

here is his last attempt with B+, i got 1 stinkin' fruit

someone please tell me what the hell is going on... i've tried searching for this forever to no avail

Have you had better luck than just one shroom at a time before??
my neighbor hates cakes, she has only gotten one shroom per cake per week.
now that she's switched to caseing it's better, but then there's other problems she says.

The exact same thing happened to a friend. He had two batches of cakes fruit once, poorly, and then the cakes died.

His third batch he cased, and wouldn't you know it? He got three big flushes before the casing contamed with green.

Case them after a 12 hour dunk in the fridge. Good luck.

nope, they've all been VERY poor results....he's got some jars incubating now, i think he'll try casing with those... are ther any solutions to his current problem?

Current problem: Yes, soak them in sterile water, in a sterile container, for 12 hours in the fridge.

Make your casing mix (Roadkill has a 60/40 tek on page 3 or 4, maybe - search is broken :frown:).

Put 1 inch layer of casing mix on bottom of casing tray (make sure the tray is about 6 inches tall and doesn't allow light to pass through the bottom or sides of it), crumble your cakes with clean hands over this bottom layer (3 - 5 inches of crumbled cake should do), then cover the chunks with about 1/4 inch of mix and poke holes through to the chunks below using a sterile fork. This will allow light to hit the myc and start primordia.

That should work. I'd have suggested incubating if you hadn't already flushed, but you could probably do that, too.

yea dude if your not dunking, i would strongly suggest that, as well as maybe a thin layer of damp verm ontop and under the cake. (double ended casing).

cakes arent as bad as people make them seem. just take the necessary measures, to ensure the maximum moisture is provided for your cakes. as well as the ideal environment. more water is better then not enough, is my opinion with cakes.

good luck man.

well most of my cakes have been dunked/shocked... to no avail... i just made a small vermiculite casing with 1 cake just for a first attempt... i'm using a small sandwhich box with a bottom and top vermiculite layer(damp).. wrapped it in aluminum foil and put in my incubator.... right now i'm not concerned with a massive yield, i just want 3 or 4 full size, true mushrooms.

alright another casing was made out of a cup, using 1 cake and 2 layers of vermiculite... it's in the fruiting chamber while the other one is in the incubator...holes were poked in the top layer to allow light to penetrate

all projects are failing - salvia dying, mushrooms not fruiting, poppies not sprouting.... sigh

are you sure you have a good humidity gauge?
maybe your not getting enough humidity.

I'd dunk those biotches and mist the sides of the fruiting chamber several times a day....and keep fanning them.

Your temps don't seem to be the problem to me.
I keep my temps around 73 to 74 all the time.

good luck bro!

well, the humidity has gotten so high that it was raining on my cakes... it was that way for a while( i combated this by wiping the lid every time i misted) i let that go on for weeks... the current little mushrooms have fuzzy mycelia on the base of their stems, meaning high humidity, right? so i have been trying to lower it lately

i have only 2 cakes in there now... i broke the other 2 up and tried some makeshift quick casings...

Casing should do it. It has in my friend's experience.

my friend never had a problem with the humidity being too high with cakes.
cakes like high humidity.

The cakes might have been dehydrated....try dunking them.

Good luck with the casing!
