some jars moving along way faster... solutions?

Alrighty, so as of now I have had 12 half pint jars of Pink Buffalo incubating for 3 weeks and one day. None are at 100% but some are definately going to get ther faster than the others. My plan was to wait until all were colonized, then mix with sublicious compost (ordered a 10lb bag last night) inside of the monotub I have built, which is 35 gallons.. I followed ohmatics/monstermitch guide.

My question now is, how do i adjust to not all the jars being done at once? Would it be possible to just make trays and put them in the monotub as the spawn becomes available to me? Would i be compromising my yield by doing this? And what would be the risk of contams? The only problem I see myself encountering is th first tray needing to be fruited as the other ones need to stay in the dark.

Any input is much appretiated, not sure how to go about this one. Thank you

If you have cakes fruit them as cakes. Get some rye and make some grain if you want to spawn to a bulk sub. Take spore prints from the mushies you get from your cakes, and you're golden.

I was going to use WBS on my next try. I'm honestly dreading fruiting them as cakes. I've already taken the steps to avoid that.

Is the compost made with Poo?

If so you will increase yields by spawning them.

Its risky though if you don't know what you are doing.

You could refrigerate any cakes that hit 100% ..... Then wait until they are all @ 100% ..... Take them out let them consolidate for a few days together and then spawn them.

Like I said your risking contams without experience though.


I would advise against this. I think you should fruit them as cakes as that is what they are designed for not spawning.

Do as you said and get some WBS and spawn with that instead.

As a beginner you might as well just fruit them as cakes. The yield is more and you will have a better chance of succeeding. If you spawn, all of your eggs are in one basket. Fruit them as cakes, save the spawn, then get WBS (I prefer Rye though). It will be easier.

What do you mean by letting them consolidate for a few days? I would rather do that, than doing multiple trays and having conflicts with FAE and light. I have a minifridge i can use for the jars as they become 100%. Not sure if the compost contains poo or not, i just chose a sponsor and it was sublicious or HMC.

Sublicious is good. But honestly, you should fruit them as cakes. When they are at 100% you let them consolidate for a few days. If you made cakes you should fruit them as cakes. It is much easier and quicker. Also, the tek you used was designed to fruit cakes not break up and spawn. Although it cane be done, your best bet is to fruit them as cakes.

By consolidating you are letting the mycillium reach down to the core of the cakes. Often when they just reach 100% it is only on the surface. If you birth your cakes at this point they will be soft and break easily. If one of said cakes should break and an uncolonized inner zone exposed then you will likely encounter contamination.

Especially if you crumble them! Let them consolidate.

You can go to the website and see what is in the sublicious. Is it pasteurized?

oh okay that definately makes sense. Yeah it comes pre-pasterized in a 10lb bag. i cant find the exact ingredients anywhere on the website though. I just think to get the most bang for my buck out of those 12 jars, seeing as thought I've got the monotub built, the compost ordered, and the jars moving along nicely.. I might as well try my hand at this. I am about to get some WBS jars prepared and ready to use the same monotub tek and compost with that type of spawn. Hopefully I'll have some faster colonization times.

You should really just fruit them as cakes and take spore prints. Or at least some of them. It would benefit in the long run. Most people have many trials and errors along the way, especially constructing their own monotub.

Yea, but how long can you leave that pre-pasteurized sub for?

I don't leave mine for more than 2 days pasteurizing. I know coir is clean and can be left for a while.

Poo on the other hand :shrug:

Thats why i asked about the ingredients.

Alright, I'm going to birth them as cakes.. My only problem is that by doing that i have no incubator for the new jars. Also, any idea as to what yield im looking at with 12 half pinters? theyll be in optimum temp range.

Now as for the spawn for the monotub, I need 6 quarts according to the tek for the 10lbs sub. I have to order the sub bc I dont have a pressure cooker. I've seen wbs jard in pint and quart jars, rye berries in pound mycobags, and grains in quart jars. What route should I take there? any advie would be awesome. G2G transfer doesn't sound like a bad option.. but seems a bit time consuming for me

I don't recommend using an incubator. They are not really all that up to date. They increase contamination rates big time.

I just leave my jars on a baking rack in the back of a room with a window.

It is much more healthy for your cakes or grains.

you expose them to light? i normally keep my house at 72ish degrees and in the incubator theyre at 83. how do they increase contams

I used to colonize in darkness also. Its a common confusion. The topic of mycology is a rather large topic and it can be easy to mix up out dated information.

Also 83 degrees is a bit high. I'd go more in the 78-80 range.

With 83 again you are opening yourself up for contamination.

Most contams thrive in the lower-mid 80's.

Trust me bro. Toss the incubator you'll be happy you did.

yea, that is another major peice of older information that people often use: Cubes need higher temps. which is simpley untrue (not saying this is what you said, just elagorating alittle :laugh: ), i colonize most of my cubes @ 68 f (20 c) constantly, they seem to LIKE the slightly lower temps. i think the higher temp thing comes mostly from edible mushrooms.

like you said, bacteria thrive @ 80-85 F, and mold from 75-85 F. if you keep temps just below the range for them but still in the viable range for cubes things usualy work out for the greater.

Also, I just ordered 6lb worth of rye grains already sterilized in 6 individual spawn bags. Along with 36cc of Hawaiian spores. Will 6cc per lb be enough?

This will be my spawn for the 10lb of compost going into the monotub.

@#1 personaly i would just leave them be because there allready used to the environment that there in, i dont know what light would do to them @ this piont, it might make them pin....


@#2 3-5 CC's would be more than enough, 6CC's per pound might be overkill..... but it wont hurt ethier, 6CC's isnt enough to throw off the moisture content. what are you going to spawn it to AFTER the rye grain? you will need a bulk substrate to spawn it in.
