Colonized Grain to Compost

How long should it take a small amount of colonized grain to completely colonize a big block of compost? The temp is about a constant 80 degrees and the humidity is relatively high. Thanks.

Also, if the mycelium on the grain doesn't start moving to the compost, can I innoculate the compost directly?
