weeping salvia

OK....I am having another prob. with my salvia. I had this beautiful salvia that was thriving. You may remember my last question about the main stem being too small to hold up it's weight.

Some of the suggestions were to replant it in a larger pot with more soil to support it. I did that and now my salvia looks like it is crying and dying. The once strong salvia has gone completely limp and wilted over the side of the pot. Is it dying or just in shock? Should I cut the leaves and stems off and just let it regrow.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Humidity helps too. You could mist a one gallon ziplock and put it around the plant after watering, size permitting.
If it is larger, you could get a semi-clear garbage bag, prop it with coat hangers, mist it and seal is around the plant. You might have to pump up the fluoros to prevent stretching.

high chemkid! is your plant falled and a bit wilted? if yes DO NOT give it more water (IF the soil is humid). thats how salvia gets killed by overwatering. now if the soil is throughly dry, DO water it. but i bet it's not the case.
once i've picked one or two leaves out of a foot tall plant and it has completely lost tugor pressure (thanks neuro for the technical term, i hope it's correctly applied) and it fell down, the stem was soft... it's soil was wet already so i just put it somewhere with a light lighting and it did recover nicely, in a matter of hours.
they do that when they're stressed (you said you moved it, right?)... take more care about it's roots next time.

in last case i think you could take cuttings out of it... but i hope this doesn't comes to be necessary.

When you repotted it did you put soil farther up on the stem than previously? When re-potting, you are supposed to have the soil at the same level as before.

are you sure no-tone? i thought it wouldn't matter too much with salvia since it should promptly root where it was buried (layered)...
the worst stress when transplanting salvia is when it's soil is a bit wet and it crumbles down, exposing lotsa roots. this is stress for sure...

IME, putting more soil in has been a good thing. The plant gets a better root system. But that wasn't with salvia divinorum.

(edit: I take that back. But it didn't make much of a diff. IME)

I'd say it's in shock. See how it is in a day or so.

Now that you mention it, i'm not so sure... With most plants, if you put soil further up on the stem, it causes rots on the stem.

With ganja, you can root it by layering or cutting, but it will surely be of detriment to the plant if you raise the soil level beyond the previous.

And on most plants, roots only readily form where there is a node. Unless there are nodes under the new level of soil, i can only think of diseases having an increased oppurtunity.

hmm that's true, i hadn't considered that he may have over watered... I jumped the gun and assumed he just didn't water.

Overwatering as well as underwatering will cause plasmolysis (wilting).


edit: oh yeah, i guess i should have read on a little further, with a majority of plants it's not good to re-pot a plant and raise or lower the soil level a great deal. With salvia it doesn't really seem to matter. Although you wouldn't want to raise the soil level like a foot, as the stem may get attacked if your soil is infected with all sorts of nasties, i'm thinking of the cestodes of the nematodes. However raising the level some what won't matter, it'll just pop out more roots if it happens to cover a node, and over time it'll pop out more roots even at internodes.

Its been two days and it doesn't seem to be recovering as suggested. The soil is plenty moist as I watered it after repotting it. The soil level is about two to three inches higher than before. I have very good lighting on it (blue spectrum lights).

Keep the advice flowing as I don't want to lose my baby. Thanks guys.

good lighting is bad, it like indirect lighting from shade or some sort.

I'm saying dig a ring around the stem. It doesn't like that moist soil around the stem.
