Update On Grow w/Pics (African Transkei/Guadalajara)
    #13628743 - 12/13/10 09:00 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

How's it going everyone? So I've harvested a total of 6 fruits (3 from one cake and 3 from another). None of them were too big. The heaviest was about 6g wet. But hey I'm glad I even got any. My African Transkei cakes are doing pretty nice. My Guadalajara cakes, which had a late start, are finally showing strong pinning. Here's a few pictures from yesterday.

AFRICAN TRANSKEI

Is it okay to leave stumps like that? Because there are pins so close to them that I would risk cutting them if I took off the whole stump.

GUADALAJARA

Yesterday that was the only cake that was really pinning but today there was more pins on other cakes. Just wasn't able to take some pictures.

But I do have a question about one of the cakes of Guadalajara.

What's up with that fruit? It started as a pin maybe a week and a half ago and is only that big. And the pins that were on the same cake today all looked a little off. Some pins looked like they were covered in snow. Or were just looked off. I'll try to get pictures of it but off the bat does anyone have a guess as to why the cake is producing weird fruits?

Hey,

Is that a SGFC?  or a ducted terrarium?

I cannot see any holes.  ...maybe the pics...

How are you maintaining fruiting conditions?
(I am thinking that you need more FAE)

Well, good luck,

JD

You should look up how to use the MACRO feature on your camera, you'll get way better shots!

I'm not really sure of the exact term for it but basically it's just cakes in a small tub. I don't have holes because I was afraid of contaminants coming in through them. But I might put holes in one of the tubs just to try it out next time. I fan/mist about 8-10 times a day.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll be sure to look it up for my next update.

I've got some African Transkei consolidating. Hoping to see something before New Year's Eve.

The dusting could be mycellial growth on the caps due to high RH. Yours still look good, though. Just try to keep the FAE up. I wouldn't do anything else to drop the RH, though. It looks like fanning it a little more can solve both problems.

Bro,

You may have a few things to work out here.

The fact is that a fully colonized cake is very resistant
to contamination.
You do need to protect it further (within reason) other
than to keep it within a broad temp range and from getting
too dry or too wet.

FAE is critical for good fruits.  You should either be
using a SGFC or a ducted humifier in your terrarium.

Keep studying.  You clearly figured out the colonization issues.

Good luck,

JD

Cool, man.  Just listen to whatever they say on this site and you'll do fine haha.

Is mycellial growth on the caps safe? Will it hinder growth at all?

Okay. Is it too late to do the holes now? Or should I go for it? Thanks for all the advice, man. It's been helpful.

But seeing as how you know your stuff I have a question related to dosage. Is one fruit just as potent as another? Or is the bigger the fruit, the more potent? Does 3 small fruits equal the same dose as 1 large fruit would (just as an example)?

Oh, it's certainly safe. You could eat the substrate if you wanted to, as long as you don't mind eating vermiculite and it's not at all contaminated. (Better to cook it... But then you'd cause some chemicals to break down.)

That's as far as it will get. I think it's actually remnants from when the pin first formed. It just left some mycellium at the surface. Possible they'll be gone before maturity.

Edit: They won't. They end up speckling the cap like Amanita muscaria has. I had a few do this, and I've seen others. I am just not thinking today, hehe.

First the basic SGFC design has 1/4" holes every 2" on all
six sides of the box.  Use a sharpie to mark where the holes
will go, and then drill.

The idea is that air will move up through the perlite and
moisten the air.  I got one to work in a coastal desert,
so I know that you can get it to work too.

(search for "SGFC" for more data)

Regarding dosage, this is a sensitive topic, as it has
so very much to do with you, your experience, the environment
in which you will trip, and the people you will trip with,
if any.

First, weight is the measure, not size or number of fruits.

Please consider the species/strain when figuring out the
weights that you want to try.  Penis Envy, Azures, Cyans,
and Paneolus (amongst others) are often several times
as strong as typical cubes.

FWIW: I would recommend 2 grams of a typical cube and
1 gram of anything more powerful.

...but I say this knowing that we have serious sky pilots
in our group.  They eat three or more times this much.

Good luck!

JD
