They start out as little balls, then gain a head later on as they become more mature.

Yup..

Little white balls are the beginning of your pin set. Also, mycellium defecates, and the color of it is a orange-yellow. Just keep a watch on it. The orange color shouldn't spread from one location, it just appears.
