strong smells are ok. BAD smells are what you have to worry about. i'd say you're ok. make sure you have something between your heating pad and the jars, so it doesn't dry them out. if you're keeping the jars in the box they came in, you may want to wrap the box in a towel and set that on the pad.good luck, report back when something happens. Personally I find that the good smell (smell of the mycelium) is fairly faint. Contamination smells like shit and is strong. Mycelium smell is great but mild, it smells like mushrooms. Oh yeah, and I personally could never smell the mycelium through the jar, that would take a pretty strong smell.------------------

while whole grains sometimes have a faint smell noticable thru the verm.,
it is not a good sign that you can smell your cakes or that the scent is getting stronger.
odds favor bacterial contamination is the culprit.

If what you're doing is taking the lids off uncolonized jars and sticking your nose in there then you're contaminated already. The best thing to do is just watch them until they're 100% colonized. You can loosen the lids a little if you need to help reduce moisture, but never take them off and breathe in there.

Heh...It's a good thing you're not taking the lids off. I dunno, man you must have a great nose to be able to smell the mushroomy smell or otherwise through a jar.

im wicked retarded when it comes to smells.
im so sensitive to smells that i cant stand it when my roomares are cooking lol....
the smell hasnt really gotten bad yet....but much time hasnt passed at all, so we'll see
