Good discussion question wiccan.  I don´t think its gonna matter so much.  I see the internet more destroyed as we move towards utility computing.  Not owning the physical box.

Right but where did they get the idea from?  Forums have been doing this ever since they were created.  If you don't like something its easy to just erase it.  Google serves companys, if something is hurting there bottom line why shouldn't they erase it?  It serves everyone who matters best interests.  Now that the shroomery is on the chopping block its not alright?

Someone has to own the internet, its fate.  Sometime soon the internet will mirror your closest playground, full of moms, camera's,and robots with large erasers.  Oh and don't forget your certificate and ID card for access to begin with, and rehab centers and ad's can't forget the ad's.

Comparing what forums have been doing and what it is alleged that google is trying to do are a world apart. No one can own the internet, it is a free commodity like the air we breathe - however, what it is alleged that google is trying to do is to capitalize on its position in the market and use it to it's advantage by strangling the market and only supporting 'google endorsed' products. Which is a very real possibility and can have large ramifications - like how the article speaks of phone companies who are pretty much reliant on sites like google.

Luckily the law contemplates for occurences such as this and it is illegal for companies to behave in 'anti-competitive' ways that dont foster competition and the ultimate best product for the consumer. They are prohibited from collusion and market rigging/misconduct by law. However there is a fine line between acting in unison with another company - just like how the rights to screen exclusive sporting events can be signed over to certain companies, and collusion or market rigging/misconduct.

We live in interesting times indeed. only time will tell how the picture unfolds.

goverments have been regulating(owning) the internet for a while now.  Our gov will back google because it helps them gain control, hell our gov prolly owns google or works extremely close with them as it is.

Our air isn't free either, companys can't put certain things into it, and people can't inhale certain forms of it and things in it.  Some of it is captured and sold.

There's nothing free about the internet anymore, there's nothing free about life.  Our lives are controlled down to our dna, and so to will the internet be.  There shouldn't be any doubt about what will happen to it, its what always happens, those in control gain more.

Two things;

First, of course i believe that someone is trying to control the world. Its been this way since the beggining of civilization. Humans tend to repeat history and its chock full of attempts at world domination. And a powerful company like google would definately aid in this process.

Are they?  i dont know


Secondly, i dont care. I will die soon and i'll be dammed if i spend my last years on Earth worrying about a group of megalomaniacs agenda.

OK so lets get a few things straight here, the only event in which Google could take over the world would be through cloud computing (not utility computing, w/e the hell that is).
OK, now in case you don't already know cloud computing involves a centralized computer with a series of clients. As a client connects they're allocated with an amount of hard drive space, bandwidth, etc. This would be a lot like the concept of 1980's mainframes.
Even though Google is one of the largest promoters of cloud computing there are still hundreds of other contenders. Microsoft and Apple are both spending a LOT of money on cloud computed cell phones.
All of these companies KNOW that this technology can ONLY be embraced for it to be successful. There's trillions of dollars of hardware in America which would become obsolete in the event that we moved to cloud computing.

Now just to drive my point home and end this discussion of ill informed notions.

Google REFUSED to censor it's search engine when China demanded such. Google went so far as to shut down the majority of their offices in China. Google has lost hundreds of billions in revenue because of their refusal. China officially changed their country's search engine to Baidu furthering the devastating losses for Google.

Don't ya think if Google wanted to take over the world by censoring the internet they would have started in China where the government was quite sincere in helping them do so?
If Google has an ulterior motive against the American people don't you think they would want China on their side?

Guess what, other companies such as Ask.com and Yahoo.com chose to censor their Chinese search engines.
GOOGLE REFUSED.
China has launched multiple state-based attacks against Google.cn. This is one of the first times a cyber attack has been made by a government and Google is on OUR side. The side of DEMOCRACY.

You think this is what you should be wasting your nonsensical ill informed conspiracy inventing time on?

You're wasting your time on this stupid shit when there is an organization who's SOLE PURPOSE is to censor the internet?
Write an article about ACTA instead of wasting your time picking out conspiracies against one of the only cooperations which is working FOR us.

not with the help of the gov, they'll have the power soon to pull entire websites off the net entirely.  Hell google is already doing it basically with that "this website has been blocked to protect you crap", you might be able to click go anyway but how many normal people will actually do that they will be to scared.  anyways back to the gov thing, starting out it might have restrictions on which one's, but eventually it will be w/e one's they want to pull.

And most people hate spammers so its going to be hard getting the word out about your website by mouth or letters anyway.  I mean think about it i still don't know about your website and its in google search :lol:

China as a GOVERNMENT is able to an extent to censor their internet by putting safe guards like Websense(this is the one they actually use) on their land lines.

If the US government starts doing such a thing, you're going to blame Google? lol.

If you really want to keep your page on their engine, Google would be extremely hard pressed to keep your website off their search engine. Just search for random shit and see how many malware/spyware infested spoof sites come up that Google can't stop due to the nature of the system.

So use a different search engine. The internet is NOT physical. Google can't like take a scalpel and start cutting bits of it out. Sure, they can censor their own site but what's stopping you from using the search engine based on a server in some dude's basement?

another search engine?you havn't been following this thread very well have you, thats exactly what were talking about, google taking over in various ways aka "antichrist of the internet".

and as i mentioned earlier google and our gov are likely buddies, 1 and the same.  and yes the gov will mostly likely have the power to rip sites completely off the internet very soon won't matter what search engine you use.

Saying that Google and the government are "one" is a pretty stupid statement. What company isn't buddy buddy with the government? Not to be would be pretty stupid. Every company seeks to back politicians that agree with their motives and politicians seek money from companies who are willing to pay.
It's how our system works with nearly any industry above small business whether on a city, state, or federal level.
It's nothing new whatsoever take a look at the pharmaceutical industries, the food industry, the news industry, etc etc etc

Please tell me how you expect the government to start ripping servers through the interwebz.
For the government to take down a website it's a long bureaucratic endeavor. For websites based in other countries where these laws don't exist it's even longer and more difficult.
You wouldn't even believe what you're allowed to host in some countries which frankly can't afford to spend resources on keeping up with American ways and most of them don't want to.
Even China who is actively and desperately trying to censor the internet can't do it. They've achieved it to an extent but not nearly as well as you'd think.

i don't see how it is, think of all the things google has managed to do, all the tools that just happen to be extremely useful for the gov, makes you wonder if they got help right, idea,s funding etc?  So how close are they, is there really a difference?  We the people do not know.  I the person say they are in bed, mad lovers, and google would bend over backwords and do anything and everything our gov asked of it aka "one in the same".
