Easy computer question... (Can't access Google)?!
    #5880090 - 07/20/06 01:24 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I've got a new laptop. I had a friend help install a wireless router, and it works fine connecting to the internet via wireless connection, however, for some reason I cannot access www.google.com. (Page cannot be displayed) All other websites i've tried seem to work so far. I've accessed google from other computers since then, and I'm pretty sure its not down at the moment..

So, why can't I reach www.google.com?

It's unlikely that it would randomly be blocked, but check your browser settings to make sure you're not blocking that page.

Sometimes some of my pages don't load b/c Javascript is blocked. Is that possible? I dunno I am not much of a computer geek or anything but that might be it??

ummm, how do i unblock javascript? Does google's page actually run javascript?

I don't think I have google blocked in my browser. Would that be under the popup blocker settings?

In addition, I cannot access Froogle, Gmail, or any other of google's services. McAfee scan came up clean.

Check the router. My router has a setting where you can block certain websites. I wouldn't be surprised if some router programming guy decided to be funny and block google. (that would be kinda funny though)

I have an option on the bottom of my screen what browser are you using? Internet options maybe?

Did you access Google successfully from other computers connected to the router, or was it computers on some other internet connection? What happens if you type 'tracert google.com' at a command prompt?

I have not tried accessing google from other computers connected to the router. At the moment this is the only wireless connection to the router, and the person who is using the computer directly connected to the router is working and cannot be interrupted.

When I type 'tracert google.com' at the command prompt it displays several different IP addresses at an average of 32ms. What does that mean?

Tracert plots the course of your connection through all the intermediate networks before reaching its destination (in the case, Google). It can tell you where a connection is failing or at least give you a place to start troubleshooting. In the command prompt window, could you click on the icon in the upper-left, select Edit | Mark, highlight the tracert results, press Enter to copy them, and PM them to me? (Or post them here but blank out part of your IP please.)

google was fucked up this morning (in Toronto for me)

tracert showed nothing out of the ordinary, nmap showed port 80 open, and lynx showed it as a 400 BAD REQUEST error.

checked from an ohio IP, everything worked fine.

Dunno why google barfed but I suspect it was a google problem entirely.

Try connecting to http://64.233.167.99/.

If that works, your ISP's nameservers are goofy.

If not, and you can connect to other sites like CNN.com and such, then that's really odd.

I cannot connect to http://64.233.167.99/.

When I run the tracert it says trace complete after 15 steps. I would post the information but I don't know what IP addresses I should or should not post online.

Unless google has been down for the past 5+ days, which I seriously doubt, its likely a problem with my computer or some stupid setting I fucked up.

Whatever browser you use (probably IE), download something else like Opera or Firefox and see if that gives you a different result. Maybe you've got some goofy setting in your browser. Dunno.

Besides, if you're not using one of those as your browser already, you should be. =)

It turns out that I can access google while on other networks, but not from the wireless network set up at my house.

Tried that already. I think my friend may have blocked my MAC address from accessing google as a joke. I have to check the computer connected to the router. If thats the case I'll have to think of a way to get him back.
