First ID attempt
    #13379828 -

Location/Habitat: Picked on Central California coast in late October after first rains. Was growing near a cluster of granite rocks in bare loose soil, under a Monterey Cypress-full shade..

Gills: The gills are a deep, dark purple brown

Stem: dark cocoa brown, flaking lighter brown, tapered- about 1 inch diameter where it joins cap, two inches at base

Cap: Somewhat oblong about 6 inches by 5 inches, an inch or so thick, light gray and a pale, tanish brown, in varying darkness, it shines more faded orangish in spots, depending on the light.

Spore print color: the gills left a footprint that's purplish-brown, the same color as the gills. But that's it. Does this mean the spores are white (never done this before)? Or are the spores the long lines of the gill footprint.

Bruising: See cap description for color irregularity.

Thanks!
Blake

It is an Agaricus.

To determine the species we will need better pictures (preferably of several specimens in various stages of development.  Also info on staining when damaged, and info on the odor.

The gills and print are dark chocolate brown, not dark purple brown.

Here are photos of its companion [the one I didn't pick, you can see the stump where I cut the other]. As to bruising or staining, I'm afraid I can't tell the difference between a bruise, a stain and natural discoloration [I have no mushroom vernacular]. As for the smell, to my novice nose it smells exactly like the "portebello" mushrooms sold in grocery stores.

Well whatever it was. It was quite good over polenta with butter and garlic. No serious upset yet [*knock on wood*]

Dude... I just don't even know what to say. You ate it before getting an ID on it? People have died for doping such a thing. Why did you even bother asking for an ID?

Not from an Agaricus, though, which Alan already identified it as...

True - but as the Lammergeir seemed to imply he either ate it before a positive ID or did not seem to care - which deserves a Facepalm if you ask me

As careful as I am I've poisoned the wife twice.  The last time with her parents.  I swear it was an accident, but nobody believes me.

Pain is temporary. It may last for a minute or an hour or a day or even a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it will last forever.

What's even more interesting is the fact that she still trusted you with the mushrooms after the first time.

She probably wouldn't have but I ate them too and poisoned myself as well.  Just goes to show you.  Never put anything in your mouth that you aren't 1000% sure what it is.

I know, I know I shouldn't have. But it looked so lovely, and I got the feeling it was already old to begin with, and thought "hey I better eat that now while it's still good." Plus when I heard it was an Agaricus I did some research online and all these articles said that A. bisporus likes Monterey Cypress [see below]. Seeings how I live in a mixed endemic Monterey Cypress and Pine forest, and the mushroom popped up under a Mty Cypress, I thought that was promising. Then I shoved my nose in it for a while and thought damn that smells tasty. This sensation even intensified as I cooked it and I thought surely something poisonous couldn't possibly smell that awesome. But the zinger is that while I enjoyed it immensely, later that evening I did have some very minor stomach upset. That could have been from anything though; mushroom included. Perhaps it was A. californicus and not A. bisporus.

"Agaricus bisporus is well known to mycophagists as the common "button mushroom" of commerce. In the San Francisco Bay Area both wild forms and escapees from mushroom farms occur. Interestingly, both types look similar and can not be distinguished without biochemical analysis. Agaricus bisporus, though not as distinctive as other Agaricus species, can be recognized by the following combination of characters: relatively short stature, cap with pale brown appressed scales, flesh which bruises slowly orange-brown to reddish- brown, but does not stain yellow in KOH, a well developed ring, smooth stipe, and a preference for fruiting with Monterey Cypress"

That's sort of what sent me over the edge. Not enough to safely eat it, but I did anyway.

Keep in mind in the future that there are deadly poisonous mushrooms that smell and taste good.
