Why Dubstep Sucks. * 12

In the beginning, there were like 4 or 5 good dubstep artists... who created their own genre of music by being creative visionaries. The likes of Skream, Digital Mystikz, Plastician, Benga, Kode9, Scorn etc. These guys were the pioneers experimenting with new sounds and styles, branching out and expanding musical horizons by combining elements of different music into something beautiful and unique.

Then.. all of a sudden flash forward to 2008 or 9 or so and there's 559752987425 clone dubstep bands all sounding the exact fucking same, just abusing the FUCK out of that WOBBLE WOBBLE WOMP WOMP ... BASSS DROOOOOOOOOP bullshit. All of them copying the fuck out of the originals and doing terrible at it, with no originality or musical prowess or attention to detail whatsoever. All of them creating the same shitty fucking cloned songs by just reusing the same hooks and techniques over and fucking over ad nauseum, bringing absolutely nothing new to the table.

This reminds me, almost identically to the whole screamo/numetal movement.
In the beginning, a few awesomely original artists based off an original concept.
Followed by 10 billion clones and 10 billion fanboys.

Like any genre, there are some genuinely amazing artists.
But the majority of them suck my ballz.
Once it hit the mainstream shit just went way downhill. Downward spiral even.

I agree Shroomism.

That said, you can still go to underground warehouses and shit like that and an unknown DJ will play an amazing set that sets the place off. You just gotta be in the right place at the right time - but that goes for for everything I guess.

That's some daaaaark shit. Scorn is the reason I got into dubstep.
A couple buddies and I snorted 2C-E and went on a cruise to the beach at night. We put in a Scorn CD and I had never heard anything even remotely close to it at that point.
Blew my fucking brains out because he had a really quality system with expensive speakers, subs and all that. Their shit is on a different frequency.

...and listening to Scorn with youtube quality sound on computer speakers is missing out on about 50% of the goodness, easily.

Indeed...Agreed...



There is still lots of amazing, original, talented producers out there...But to find them you either just have to know, or know how to dig for music.


There's so much horrible generic sounding absolute shit out there right now...And dubstep has blown up into "brostep"



Personally I don't even like the heavy stuff all that much, Datsik, Excision, Bassnectar, ETC have some producing talent. But I just really don't dig there sounds.


I'm more into the deep, dark, and techy sounds....

Yup, as mainstream as dubstep is. There are still a bunch of good underground shows, with unheard of producers/DJs. And of course being at a live show and that environment is really what it's all about...

Just like there are good artists for a genre, there are an extra 100 bad ones. Look at any other genre. For all the good "rock" bands, theres about 10,000 shitty as hell bands you NEVER want to hear play.

Dubstep is to electronic music as deathcore is to metal/hardcore... The former is built almost utterly on bass wobbles... the latter breakdowns, both genres have some really good artists but the overwhelming majority is trash... but good or bad you get tired of the gimmick eventually.

I agree wholeheartedly with Shroomism.  Actually, the only "dubstep" artist I've ever listened to that I specifically remember REALLY liking was Bassnectar, if you can even clump his music with all that other crap.

All the rest sound pretty much the same to me.  Granted, I have heard a few tracks that I thought "hey, that aint too shabby", but it wasn't good enough to make me remember their name.

Plus, the dubstep fanatics around my area are complete tools.

Fuck dubstep.
