Thought of another use.  Buy a gamepad, install a bunch of emulators, and hook it up to your TV.

Or install XBMC on it, get a remote, and use it to stream music and videos to your TV.

Or do both.  And it can still function as your server or whatever, too.

i have a machine specifically for this (also running Arch).

if you want to go this route then youll have to install xorg then, ideally, set it to autologin (no password) at run level 5 in /etc/inittab, add exec xbmc-standalone in ~/.xinitrc

you can do it the easy way from within a window manager or whatever.. the reason you do it that way is so you dont have to waste ram and cpu cycles on running a window manager.. you just run xbmc and nothing else. it just streamlines the system.


obviously, OPs machine isnt going to do HD video. a fat hdd would still help in this situation.

Yeah, no HD video but he could stream SD and music from computers across the network.  Hard drive size wouldn't matter then.  This is what I use my original Xbox for, since my TV and sound system are in another room.

That's a good tip about not having to use a window manager

meh.. depends how you want to set it up  :shrug:

my htpc has a very small hdd but i also have a dedicated server.. if i was combining i would definitely want a big fat drive.
