Problem with newly built PC
    #5280763 - 02/09/06 05:58 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

OK, this is my first PC build and everything went fairly smooth until I try to boot into XP. I tried using the hdd from my Dell, witch has XP installed from the disk that came with it. (I dont know if this matters, but the disk says only to be installed on a Dell PC). It gets to the splash screen and after about 2 seconds freezes and the BLOD comes up and says there is a problem with either a new hdd or the hdd controller. I'm certain everything is hooked up correctly so I'm thinking its got to be either something in the Dell\XP installation or the bios on the new board is not compatible for some reason, or I could be totally wrong about both of these. If anyone has any info or suggestions I would love to hear them.
Just in case anyone is wondering here is the mobo\cpu combo I'm working with:

Did you install a new copy of windows on this hard drive or just simply put it on the new motherboard/cpu?

If its not a brand new installation, ie formatting the hard drive its probably not going to boot into windows, to much hardware has changed

Swapping a HDD with OS to another system will in most cases not work
since XP is configured with that specific components.
Just format the HDD and do a fresh install of XP.

One thing you can try is removing the "fastdetect" flag from the boot.ini file. The boot.ini file is hidden, in your root directory. The "fastdetect" flag tells windows not to look for new hardware when booting. Of course, to remove the flag, you will need to be able to boot the harddrive on the original system.

1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
3. Under System Startup, click Edit. (Notepad will open)
4. Remove the "/fastdetect" characters, not the entire line!
5. In Notepad, click File on the Menu bar, and then click Save.

It would be better to say that if you do not remove fastdetect, then it will not automatically configure for the new bios and chipset.

Removing may or may not help... usually works though...

You might not be able to use that copy of windows.

The major PC manufacturers make quite a few changes to their copies of windows, usually so that it can only be used on a specific model of their machines. If you try to install it on any other computer, you'll get a message saying "this CD is not for this unit" or something.

HP does this for sure. I'm positive the other majors do it as well.

I hate HP.

I know Tren does too.  I just like adding in that I hate HP.

Ps. Tren is right on what he is saying as well, hp sure does this.

Not all HP media does.  The EVO line, for example, has a common OS disc and machine specific restore discs.  The common OS disc will install on anything, but requires a key.  If you use the machine specific restore discs, they only work on the type of machine they are built for, but no key is required.  I work mostly with the business line of HP, so things may be different for people playing with the consumer line (the crap you get at office max, etc...)

...guess I shouldn't tell you that I am an HP field engineer then...

The XP cd that came with the Dell says "Only to be installed on a Dell PC". I figured it had programs on it that would make it compatible only  on a Dell, which is why I might be having problems. Oh well, I need to get another hard drive anyway because the mobo only has one IDE header, which I'm going to use for my 2 opticals. I'm curious to see how much better SATA is anyways. Seuss, I probaly wont attempt your suggestion since I'll be getting a new hdd and a fresh copy of XP, but its great info to have. Thanx alot everyone!

Yeah it's the consumer line I am most familiar with.

Their business units are pretty good, in my limited experience, and I know they've always had some quality scientific instruments. They sure as hell don't know how to make a quality consumer-level computer, though

There's either too many proprietary add-ons (the more expensive models), or just shitty hardware (the cheaper models). Either way the computer sucks.

I was always surprised that anyone would buy, and continue to buy, such crappy hardware. Then I spent a year or two talking to the customers themselves, and it all made sense :smirk:

Agree... I avoid HP's consumer line like the plague... however, I am extremly impressed with their proliant line of servers. Actually Compaq's, but they are now one in the same.
