yeah it's definitely pretty cool. but if you're not into it you're not into it and its going to be lame. sorry about the earlier assumption. i just know so many of my peers are in it for the title or the money, i can see it in their eyes during lecture or lab; it's a common thing with prestigious professions. personally i'm more fond of the creative side than the 'science' of it, though the two go hand in hand. but getting through makes it a challenge because of all of the dense math. i wish there was more emphasis on lab work.

i'm also very interested in psychology as well as creative and fine arts. i'm thinking i'll land a part time job as a lab tech or something and fund some more degrees after i get my fe passed. what was industry like?

i have never worked with other engineers, so i really don't know. i first did an internship at a non-profit, where i guess i did a little work under a senior engineer, but it pretty much just involved carrying out basic instructions; take measurements of this, enter that into this program, etc. it wasn't an engineering firm though. and then i worked for a small company where the unorganized boss wanted me to do a bunch of different things that i wasn't qualified to do.

i was trying to be idealistic and work for companies that seemed to be doing good things, but now i just want to work somewhere reputable with a solid, organized engineering department.

i've always been torn over the major myself. it would be cool if it actually felt creative, but every time i had a project it seemed like other students didn't want to brainstorm or consider any unconventional possibilities for the design.

i do think you need a solid handle on all of the technical aspects in order to be an innovative engineer. i am not sure i would be a good design engineer right now because i half-assed so many classes, and i never became really familiar with all of the practical materials, parts, machines and so on that everyone else seemed to "just know". so many of those guys have parents in engineering and seem to have had a natural feel for it.

Chances are: if your goals include having enough money to not have to work, having enough money so you can be lazy all day, and or having enough money to exceed your regular payments and purchases, or any combination of these then you will probably never make "boatloads of money".

Yeah, if his calling is flipping burgers at McDonalds along with the other English and Psych majors.

Mechanical Engineering is a real-world, applicable science major that will take you places once you get to know others in the field. Networking is everything.

I'm in IT and have been doing grunt admin work for years, barely making 52k/year. My friend is in the security sector and got me to interview for a job at the company he just started at. I'm going to be making 75k/year, starting, over there. 23k bump in pay, just like that, for a job I wasn't even looking for, all because I knew a guy that's well respected.

It sounds cliche, but over time I've found it to be golden. It's all about who you know, not what you know.

not everyone's main ambition is to earn a comfortable salary. you can do clinical as a bachelor of psychology these days.you guys don't get it.

Well, I thought the OP's point was that he wants to get paid. Doing clinicals might be very interesting if you get some Dexters in there, but otherwise, it's tedious work that doesn't pay well in the short term, and only a few get paid really well in the long term. If you start a private practice, you can make bank listening to neurotic Jewish folks kvetching about how their mothers never loved them or whatever, but that's about the best you can hope for.

The way i see it:
Networking is the upmost importance.
Experience will get you places, particularly if you interview well and know how to verbally apply your past to the present and future.
Education is important if you're targeting a specific industry. And by education i do mean taking on learning and extra responsibility, even at a minimum wage job, to develop your skills - not just Formal education. Be the first to put in applications internally when higher positions become available - it shows a keen interest to develop and support the business thats supporting you. Never think that a job is above you (of course in areas you're familiar with) - you might surprise yourself.

Keep in contact with people you meet, even if things aren't good at the moment. You never know when that entrepreneur will have a break through and need your skills.

And alway keep in mind dreams for yourself.
i.e If you have to slowly acquire parts for a prototype of something you would like to produce. Start building that website. Start researching extraction methods etc. (time permitting of course). Either way, you're gaining new skills and insight that could be transferrable into other areas.

Its a hard road for most. And many don't get where they want to be, and many fall shortly after. And thats the nature of the game. But its no reason to not try and up your individual/collective productivity, or up your pay!
