Ah...yeah, my education already felt like such a big sacrifice. I don't really feel like going back. I guess the best thing for me to do, as someone who wants to work at their own pace, is to keep working part time and start building up a business in my off hours.

Hey, sorry for taking such offense, I guess I was sort of charged. Can you tell me any more about sea voyage? Have you actually traveled like that yourself? I have been thinking of starting business for sooo long, but I just want to get the fuck out of my parents' house and it would take too long to build something up right now. That is irrelevant though. Once I get a job, I might build up a business where I could make like $1,000-$2,000 month, hopefully passively. Could I travel on that?

You are a mechanical engineer. Does that mean you have P.Eng designation?
If yes, then the resource sector all over the world will pay you $150k/yr to spin your eng magic.
Check out mining in particular. The website "Infomine" will have openings for hundreds of mech eng right now, in Australia, Africa, Canada, US, Asia, etc. if you can CAD you will be hired.

If no P.Eng yet then you can still get entry level around $80-100k/yr., and work toward designation.

The opportunities are out there.

Whoa! I am not P.E., I am EIT -- I need 3-4 years of experience underneath a P.E. before I can become one too. So I should look into mining and other fossil-fuel type jobs? I used to be really against those jobs but then I realized if someone doesn't go dig up fuel, we won't be able to implement enough renewable energy fast enough to keep ourselves alive.

Well, sooner or later all the green ideas will come to fruition.
Meantime, virtually every thing we use in daily life for communication and transportation contains something that was mined.
So it will be with us for some time to come. Use it for now, and work toward alternatives in the future.

Once reconciled to this, then the resource sector jobs become attractive. And, the best way to get the entire industry to change is from within, not from outside. So a good number of like minded employees using thier knowledge and expertise to influence the corporation will be much more effective than street protests.

As an EIT you can still get all over the world working for mining. Check out Freeport McMoran, they are in Indonesia (great place, I was there) and in the Congo. In addition they have operations all over the southwest in the US. Still, many companies look for your skills, good hours, good pay, lots of time off.

That's all I can tell you, now it is up to you.

There really is no pain as far as I know. I took the FE exam, which took a couple weeks of studying, but the big requirement is the three years of work under a P.E. Assuming you're working anyway, there is no difference. And then you have to take another test to actually get the P.E. So I guess there is a little bit of a pain.

I have no focus. I was working my way into HVAC, but I got discouraged and disillusioned with my job and quit, and then I decided that I would just do something really easy and simple that wouldn't consume so much time, but realized I couldn't find any jobs like that. So I am pretty much just looking for anything now.

I decided that I don't know what the hell I actually enjoy, so I might as well just make some money.

You need to study mechanical engineering...4 year degree. Kinetics, thermo, controls, physics, calc, programming, CAD, electrical. there are definitely easier ways to make money. just that for me, it is the path of least resistance.

If you don't have the basic ambition to search the nets for this info, you don't have enough to study to be a P.Eng.  :sad:

Eh, don't really feel like it at this point. Maybe eventually. I am sort of glad I understand a lot of the things I learned. The physics and math are useful for whatever.
