Suggestion for beginner astronomy book?

my friend want's someone to 'buy' her a star and her birthday is coming up.

she is interested in them, so i figure a book she can use will be way better than a pretending to buy a star, plus i would like to read it too and learn with her

any suggestions?

Watch those threw the worm hole with margin Freeman.

I love morgin freeman as a actor so it made learning fun. Plus if your high it blows your mind.

But it's really expansive, expensive, and technical. If she's only got a passing interest, don't waste your money.

You could look around craigslist for a cheap telescope too. A small one is still neat to look through.

Check out Borders or a similar store. They usually have a bunch of books like that on the discount table for 2 or 3 dollars. The one by my old apartment had a permanent table set up for it.

As an amateur astronomer, no. You said she only has a passing interest. Correctly using and getting meaningful time out of a telescope requires a bit of effort on her part. I wouldn't waste your money yet, buy something like what i posted and then gauge her interest from there.

I would suggest the following.

A telescope is totally out of the question unless you're will to spend $400+ on your friend. If you buy a cheap scope at a department store you are getting exactley that, there's a reason they are called trash scopes.

Although a good pair of binoculars is a ideal for someone just starting out in the hobby.
