Facing Homelessness
    #13289569 -

I hate asking about this here given the number of immature people and trolls at this forum, but putting up with all of the joke/asshole answers will be worth it if I get even one kind response.

I've received news that I have to be out of my place at the end of the month. I haven't been able to find a source of income since my internet business failed, have less than $800 in my bank account, and can't get financial aid to live on a college campus until spring. I had a barter arrangement here, keeping up with the place and helping with the family business for free instead of paying rent, so this is a shock and I'm not sure what to do now. The situation is a lot more complex, but I'll keep it brief now and add more details later.

I'm trying to get a grape picking job at a vineyard because harvesting season is coming and I've exhausted every other option for income. I don't know what the chances are with cheap immigrant labor around, but I know someone with connections in Napa so that helps. Also, a tradesman I know might hire me in the next couple months, but it's not certain. I've done a bit of glass and restoration work in the past but trade work is hard to find because the economy is so bad and nobody can afford to pay someone to apprentice or assist. And so many people are competing for jobs here that it's a given that a few will end up incomeless and homeless.

None of my friends or family members can help right now because they're all suffering financially as well, so this is the first time in my life I've faced something like this. I'm considering taking my car, loading up with outdoor gear and nonperishable food, and driving north for an extended camping trip. Either that or finding an intentional community to stay at for a while. Despite how crappy this whole thing is, I still feel lucky to live in Northern California where there are some better options than I'd have living in other areas. I don't know what else to do, but I know for sure the last thing I want is to be homeless near or in a city. Has anyone else had any experience with this? Is it really as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

To be in the midst of fatness with more people is the best way to go. North Cali is still the country but with economy and less demented population.
You could come to the farm here and be a wizard saint - but we got no weed worth smokin', no economy and FAR less quality and cultural options.
You can "Mushroom Tramp" up there (All Kinds) and not do too bad. Now that mushies are a thing at the markets they are pricey. It is a wildman's blessing and lazy too.
DO NOT steal pot. Someone will see and shoot you.
Decide you are going on the adventure of your life and be enthusiastic about it because that is your best energy and focus. Stay up in the light and there will be people there.
Use, and develop and use, skills that expand your identity and benefit you. There is a ton of really neat shit you can do on the road and since you have more money than most and some notice you ought to be able to do lots better than most.
Don't rush out and blow your dough on expensive camping shit. Take time and think it through and try to get what you can at the goodwill.
Most folks that go out to shop end up buying a bunch of shit ($) that they don't really need and not getting good shit they really could use. Like tiny pocket stove instead of coleman two burner. You really don't need much on your own and ya get tired of fuc*'in with it quick.
Be a little creative too. Use cool looking covers for a teepee or something - that makes it nice, and you have good company. Anybody can sleep in a wallmart pup tent.
Buff up your hydration and health now and use the forest when you are in it to keep you healthy.

Be careful! Always be prepared to meet your next opportunity.
Have fun. At least where you are they have variety and sour diesel

Nobody pays for blood anymore and I don't really own a lot of stuff. I've had a few garage sales but it's not like I'm going to get enough for a months rent with it.

well i was homeless for 3 years, just recently got taken in by the only family member i speak too and am trying to get into college, my advice is that there is no easy answer, ignore the idiots telling you to get a job, i understand it isn't easy to do, just do what you can and more than anything avoid becoming comfortable, being homeless is alot easier than most people realize if you have above average intelligence, it is easy to just accept your situation and give up on trying to fix it

just keep your head up man and know that being homeless in our country is still easier than being anyone in a third world country, you will be ok man

Thanks for the advice, especially the part about people telling me to "get a job", which is an easy answer to a complex problem. I have been looking and it's hard enough when there are more people than jobs where I live, even harder when you need accomodations for a disability.

I think I've found a place to stay for a while so I might not have to live out of my car. I'm making a little money doing freelance stuff online and will be hopefully learning a trade soon.

PS I'm not a man

I've lived out of my car and out of my backpack before. Car is easier. Either way you'll be fine though, if you just be brave you will realize that it's not that bad having less attachments in life. It's good to be able to be self sufficient, but if you have to bum it for a while you will be okay, and you might just find out that the universe is kinder than you thought.

The main advantage to having a car is not ever having to worry about finding safe places to sleep. Just park somewhere and lock the doors. Also you can travel really really easily if you have a car without having to hitchhike.

If your going to try to get back into society as soon as possible and whatnot, probably staying in a city would be the best. Being homeless in the city with a car means parking tickets if your not careful, so watch out for that. In the city there is free food, especially in berkeley. The people there will treat you really good and you will get a full meal each day no matter what, but if your sketched out about making friends with bums and streetkids, don't bother.
Anyway, in the city you might could find a job if you want, but if you want to make it into a road trip then grab a sharpie marker, ALL of your blankets and see how far that car will take you. Make sure to check the oil and water often!
Flying a sign will get you anything you need (pretty much just gas and food) and if your traveling you'll find that a lot of the people that help you out aren't doing it cause they feel bad for poor you, but they actually respond to the fact that your going on an adventure, seeing things they always wanted to see or just being free, which a lot of people wish they were doing and it makes them happy to be able to help out on someone else spiritual trip. Also a lot of them are gonna be old hippies returning the favor.

You originally mentioned camping, if you end up doing that, I definitely recommend that you go with the suggestion of not going out and buying a bunch of gear. By the way, that little pocket gas burning cooking implement that would be 1000 times better than a coleman stove? Don't buy one of those either. they're expensive and you can make a better one out of a couple of old cans that is smaller, lighter, cheaper to run on denatured alchohol, and easier to use than the ones that sell for $75+ at rei or whatever. google hobo stove to find out more about that.

Anyways, I'm glad to hear that you may have worked something out, but if you do end up out of the house lifestyle, you will be fine, especially if you keep an open mind and turn it into a learning experience.

I think that things will work out just fine for you. You have a good head on your shoulders, it seems. That's usually the biggest deciding factor in the grand scheme of things.

I wish you only the best in this journey that is your life.

Ive been homeless before.

The catch 22 with the whole "get a job" solution is that you cant get a job without an address and you cant get an address without a job.

If you have ~800 here might be a good plan;
  • Find a cheap weekly hotel for about $130 a week.
  • Go to the day labor center everyday to come up with 40-200 a day depending on what you are doing to help pay for the weekly
  • Get food-stamps so that food is taken out of the equation

If Mexicans without green cards, residences or social security numbers can do it you'll have no problem.

that's the problem, here in kansas illegals are common and the temp services hire them because they know they will accept less cash, seriously, they took er jobs!

Yup - that be true. They get skated through without ability to fill out a application and you got to pee in a cup. Fuc*ing traitor companies.

This might be part of my problem. I was just told today that there will probably be no chance of me finding temporary work on a vineyard or farm, as it's all done by Mexicans. It sucks when I can't find a job because I speak English.

Now I'm looking into building restoration projects; being female and unable to lift 70 pounds at once also decreases my options when it comes to labor jobs but I've done restoration work in the past and at least have some experience with it. There are plenty of people out there that don't rely on shoddy illegal labor because they know it costs them more in the long term.

I just really don't want to become a panhandler or the stereotypical city bum, so the extended camping trip idea is starting to look like a good option again if things don't work out.

Maybe you should just find a commune.

The commune thing is an option, as well as WWOOFing.
