Prisoner#1 said: there's no lucky shots, there's those that land and inflict harm and those that dont, call it lucky if you want but when my hundred pound sister broke her 210lb husband's cheek it wasnt luck and it wasnt training, it was determination to prevent him from ever hitting her again, somehow his military and martial arts training failed him when the boom box collided with his face
Quote: ideally isolate one.
ideally, eliminate the threat from both attackers, isolate one and the other is still an issue, drop one and you still have the other to contend with, if there's several people, as I mentioned, eliminate the one that poses the immediate threat and move to the next before they have time to realize that the fight is going to get ugly
when I was working security at a pool hall I watched as a kid from Saudi Arabia held off a dozen assailants that came from a Klan rally, they were armed with stick, bats, tire irons and chains, the arab kid had a pocket knife with a 2 inch blade, he was determined that they'd all bleed and kept them at bay for several minutes, I intervened and stopped the one that instigated the problem and the rest scattered, the butt of a pool cue to the hip causes plenty of pain, enough to make a man cry
Quote: as a general system though, it really is all about what it trains you to do in less than ideal situations, it changes your instincts so to speak and only a fool would rely solely on the martial art rather than common sense.
training overrides common sense and instinct, that's the purpose of training, common sense tells you to try and run when several people are attacking you, like in the P&T clip, it's about fear management
Quote: the simplest defensive maneuver is a well placed kick to the solar-plexus and cross on guard, and hopefully that is all you need. why not the groin? partly because people protect it, or you could miss easier, and you may not always be fighting a man, among perhaps other reasons.
reconsider whom you're training under, the simplest defensive maneuver is to run like hell, a kick to the solar plexus will 9 times out of 10 land you on the ground while you're opponent is kicking the fuck out of you. you can learn all the fancy chuck norris flying roundhouse kicks you want but the second you start kicking above the waist you put yourself into harms way, because it takes no more than a step forward to eliminate all your energy, scoop you up and slam you on your head or a step back to have you expending your energy in wasted motion, when that leg gets started my foot will stop it or I'll step in and on your toe and simply push you to the ground
if you want to argue semantics or situations like getting smacked with a boombox, or whether "running" is actually a defensive maneuver, then yeah, but did i not just get done explaining they tell you best case is to just run or not fight, etc.
none of this takes into account reality. a pocket knife against blunt objects even with multiple attackers still leaves the attackers questioning whether they want to get cut or stabbed. How is this news to anyone with half a brain.
a kick to the solarplexus, generally not as effective as a kick to the groin of course but if you want to throw every single scenario possible out there lets just be honest, i have already explained multiple times to just use common sense, and not have the expectation that it is going to make you superman just because of the training.
I don't know where you get the fancy flying kicks thing from, are you under the impression that Kenpo is like Tae Kwon Do? Because it most certainly is not.
Competition is admittedly more to show/train the technique and there are far too many variables to sit here and explain them all.
I don't knock Krav Maga by any means, in fact, I would recommend it to anyone who can find the time to take some form of Self Defense as it is fairly easy to get some tactics under your belt, and some principles... but...
The mindset that you are going to do some defensive maneuver, or whatever they show you as a drill and thats exactly what you should do, and therefore you should learn ten things and you will do them this way and.... well my friend you will quickly learn that in and of itself will likely get your ass kicked unless you are willing to adapt and learn EVERYTHING.
and of course, fear management is never a bad thing, it might even help you get away, allow you to get the upper hand for long enough to get away, show the attacker you mean business, and everything you mention is fear management anyway. staying and fighting is the worst thing you can do when you can easily get away, and lets be honest, if you want to be able to fight better to defend yourself, learning fear management and actually taking some bumps will teach you to react when hit, not the opposite.
muscle memory is literally the biggest thing about all of this, and not every time you get in a fight will you even square off like everyone seems to think.
Kenpo, at least if taught properly won't bullshit you with any chi concepts, nor will it teach you that any defensive maneuver is a means to an end, its a very abstract train the mind to react without thinking when the shit hits the fan and i have to bluntly say that you must not know that much about it if you talk of flying kicks or not crippling the opponent. There are breaks, groin shots, knee spikes, neck breaking moves, and any number of brutal shit that is exactly what you speak of.
I was told "if there are two people, its already not fair, don't be afraid to maim at that point."
Besides, not every fight calls for that sort of thing. I suppose if it takes two hits and a leg sweep to take someone down it already looks brutal and scary enough to get people to back off. If not, well there ya go.....
