I want to get into Astro-photography myself, but don't have a nice camera yet. Here's a couple shots I took with my little digital.

Moon, Venus & very faint Mercury

There's a lot of different camera filters being used and a little shopping. astronomy.com has a photography sub-forum, some of the people there might know how to take a photo like this.

Diving into the Earth far in the distance is part of the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. Much closer, the planet Jupiter is visible as the bright point just to band's left. Closer still are the park's picturesque buttes and mesas lit by a crescent moon. In the foreground is the cave housing a stone circle of unknown origin named False Kiva. The cave itself was briefly lit by flashlight during the exposure. Astrophotographer Wally Pacholka reports that getting to the cave was no easy trek. Also, mountain lions were a concern while waiting alone in the dark to record the mosaic.

Cause more often then not, astro-photographers use long exposure settings and mulitple photos combined to capture more light. The human just isn't as powerful.


...and you are probably in an area with at least a little light pollution. You have to be FAR away from major cities to get this kind of display.

There is a bit of light pollution out here, nothing big, I'm 20 minutes out of a 7,000 person town. But yeah I figured they used special filters/long exposure to get those kinds of shots, it would be spectacular if the night sky simply looked like that :thumbup: Not that the bare eye doesn't unveil an amazing display of its own.

A dark starry night of Easter Island, isolated in the Pacific Ocean. The two brightest stars of our night sky, Sirius and Canopus, shines besides a galactic dwarf neighbor, Large Magellanic Cloud, some 160,000 light years away. The Easter Island's large statutes, or locally called Moais, remained from 13th to 15th century.

Equinox Auroras

Last night, the sun's magnetic field near Earth tipped south. This opened a crack in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured in and fueled a magnificent display of arctic Northern Lights.

Thilo Bubek took the picture not far from Tromsø, Norway. "We had some nice auroras," he says, with what can only be described as Norwegian understatement. "The clouds and calm sea contributed to a photogenic scene."This is the time of year when south-pointing magnetic fields from the sun frequently puncture our bubble of protection against the solar wind. High latitude sky watchers should be alert for equinox auroras
