Noob Mistakes, But Can It Be Saved? With Pics!

Okay, so I started reading up on this site and got a little ahead of myself.
I ordered a print and syringe and knocked up 24 pint-sized jars,  closely following the "older" PF Tek with BRF. At first things looked promising: 22 of the jars showed white/off-white growth while one had white+contam and one never grew anything (at least my sterility was okay, I suppose). I made quite a few mistakes along the way (the biggest was allowing the jars to stall because the tek I was following didn't mention GE), and have learned a lot about what I did wrong and why.
At one point I decided to try to salvage what HAD grown in the jars by taking the mycelium out of them, crumbling it, and going ahead with the casing procedure. I used 12 jars of mycelium per casing tray because there was so little of it per jar. This left me with two trays, one with the spore print-derived mycelium (which had grown in the jars noticeably quicker) and one with the syringe-derived mycelium. These were sitting in the trays above a layer of vermiculite/potting soil and below a layer of pure potting soil (per the PF tek).
Well the spore print tray grew white strandy stuff from the areas where the mycelium was concentrated. As it grew I became more and more convinced that it was cobweb mold. That tray also showed signs of trichoderma and other nasties, so it's sitting outside right now (lid off) so that I can see what happens (not at all hopeful for fungi from it).
The other tray, however, looks promising. The white strands are definitely different from the spore tray. They're thicker, more rope-like, and not spreading quite as quickly. I'm guessing that this is what mycelium is supposed to look like during casing. Pics below..,







So here's my question for you all..,
I'm leaving for Burning Man this Friday. The reason I started this all in kind of a rush is that I wanted some of the crop to be ready by then. Is there anything that I can do to speed up the tray in the pics so that I can get something by this Friday (leaving after midnight)?? At the moment I'm leaving the lid on, but I started misting/fanning it a little bit yesterday. It seemed to respond well to the initial misting.
What can I do?

Should have let those jars colonize first, never a good move to get impatient.

The one that has mold on it, go ahead and burry it in the shade and put some grass clippings on top of it. It might fruit something for you in a month or something.

Hmm..,

Well one thing about it is that it's definitely still growing. Is there any chance that it would fruit before Friday? Or can I try to pull just the mycelium out and do something with that?

No pins today, you probably won't have anything edible by Friday, but it depends on the strain and how far along it is under the surface. Cross your fingers.

And no, there's nothing useful you can do with the myc. It doesn't make anything active until it starts pushing up fruits.

Never ever spawn a tray without 100% colonized jars.
You should have just done the cakes in a SGFC.. :facepalm:
I don't see much hope for you.
Trich can and will destroy mycelium. Although you could dump those outside maybe in a garden or in some compost somewhere and get fruits.
Get that shit out of your house.

irockesp - The tray that was showing trich is outside the house. I had just read about how nasty that stuff is when I saw it forming. Now I'm thinking about putting it somewhere with a layer of hpoo on top..,

I guess another question is.., what's the best way to avoid having to re-purchase spores/syringes? I'm not sure whether to just wait for shrooms (might be tricky since we'll all be out of town for ten days or so, so no one to fan/mist), or try to slice off some mycelium to start more jars, or even take the tray on the trip with us and see what happens?

Are you completely out of spore solution?
If you are and don't want to buy anymore, what you can do is clone a fruiting mushroom.
You could spore print a fruiting mushroom and make more syringes as well.
For preserving strains there are many many methods of approach!

So I left town for a week with a friend in charge of watering this semi-failed batch every once in a while. When I got back this is what I found..,



So my question is.., what's the best course of action? Do I pick the fully developed shroom and the little abort, keep drying them somehow, and use them after a few days? Can I scrape up the spores that the big one shot onto the wall and try to start a new batch? I want to make batch number 2 as soon as possible and would love to not have to buy/wait for another sporeprint (or could I slice some of the shroom off to start a new batch?)

This would work if used on agar dishes. Possibly even in an LC. Transfer part of the inside of the upper stem, I believe.

Otherwise though, it would seem you may have to start over. Should have taught the babysitter how to make a spore print.

Awesome, I'll give that a shot. Does it matter if the mushroom has been picked for a while? As it stands, it's still in the tray.

Also, is there any way to scrape up the spores and use them? I understand that contamination may be a problem.., could I mix them with a water and boil for long enough to kill contams but not the spores?

And should I try to keep watering the tray to see if anything else grows (including the abort), or is the abort as big as it can possibly get?

Well I went ahead and picked the shrooms last night and started rehydrating the tray. Then I remembered that there were still spores on the side so I sterilized a knife, scraped up what I could, wiped it all onto a piece of white paper, and taped it up.
I'm going to try knocking up some quarter pint jars with the "spore print" tomorrow to see what happens.
What do you think the odds are of everything getting contaminated?

I am interested to see how this went for you.

Many say prints on paper are harder to work with than on foil. For this reason I've only ever used foil. Also I have never tried to salvage prints from the side of a tub or anything.

If you have agar on hand, you could put the prints on that, then wait for it to grow out. If it is contaminated it would only be one dish instead of all of your jars. You could also clean up the sample and make more transfers.

I think that you might be ok....Do you have a pressure cooker? Unlike cakes, fully colonized grain jars can be used to easily create a liquid culture that can then be used to inoculate other jars.
