Rough, strandy stems...
    #3276534 - 10/25/04 06:41 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Ugh, what could cause this? My latest casing has had small fruits (B+) with very coarse, strandy stems... They look sort of like wood with the bark roughly shaved off and feel quite hard. It seems like it'd be caused by low humidity but that isn't the case... Humidity is high 90s and I fan 10 times a day probably. They receive plenty of fluorescent light.

Hmm, fanning too much? What would that do, disturb the shrooms while they're trying to fill with water?

fanning too much can dry them out.. but 10 times a day doesn't sound excessive. Are you spraying after each fanning?

Nope. No camera. I don't know what's up... I've heard bad things about yields from popcorn but never gave them much credence. Cased with 50/50+.

Well, I'm sure the trip'll be fine... I doubt it fucks with alkaloid content and all. I'm just not too happy with the yields at the moment :/ Especially considering the substrate layer was a good 3" thick atleast.

You could just be talking about thick stems. They look barky. I have some pics I'll probably get up later..my GT's look like that. They're not thin and spindily though so its not the same..its very meaty. But look like bark from a tree almost. 3" thick substrate won't give you the best yeilds..you should have split that substrate up. Had you used the same amount of substrate but doubled the surface area to make it 1.5 inches you would have probably multiplied your yeild by 1.5-2x. 1.5-2 inches is where you want your substrate for grains IME.

I forgot to mention, to much light has made me spindily shrooms. Like:

"life is like a drop of rain getting closer and closer to falling into a lake, and then when you hit the lake there is no more rain drop, only the lake."

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)
Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)

It's probably due to too much light... For some reason lately I've had the flo on way too much.
