contam in dry verm layer?
    #13116645 -

I birthed my first four jars today thats were already pinning inside the jar. there were no visible signs of contams before i opened it, but when i did at the top of the dry verm layer in one there was wispy strands that looked like cobweb, but i guess could have been mycelium because it was growing into the verm layer.

and a second jar had a strange brownish/ yellow type growth in the dry verm, that also wasnt visible til i opened the jar.

i washed all the dry verm off so all thats left was colonized cake. theyre now dunking. should i be worried or do you think I'll be ok because the verm "filtered" it and i removed the filter?

interesting, I'd certainly keep an eye on that one cake and be on the look out for any future contams.  Being as how you have already dunked, I'm not sure you're going to even be able to distinguish the one that had the possible contam on the dry verm layer.  So what I would do is when you rest them to fruit and after you roll in dry verm, I'd leave the side that had the dry verm layer up, so that you would be able to identify (and quickly) any contam that may have developed locally.

Just my dos centavos, I'm sure an expert will weigh in on this.

did you use half pints or pints, they tend to pin ahead of time in pint jars but if they pinned ahead of time in a half pint jar it could be them running from a contamination, did you smell the jar onced opened ?  i would say fruit them and watch them closely without misinterpreting bruising of the cakes for contams....

these were half pints, i didnt notice any particular smell besides the mycelium, but one of them was most definitely growing "something" in the dry verm.

after the were fully colonized i consolidated them for 6 days and i noticed they were already pinning, so i decided to birth em. these were cambodians and seem to grow much quicker than my other strains. these are the first four jars ive ever birthed though, for the record

It's very common for mycelium to grow into the verm filter, especially if you incorrectly left the foil on top after inoculation.

i took the foil off, but what i was worried about was the contam in the verm layer, after its been washed off should it stay off, because it was in the "filter" and i removed it?

what has it got to do with foil, the myc is searching for nutrients and just grows upwards doesn't it?

No it has no GE so it's stretching itself out for some useful air. It's telling you to take the foil off.

All my cakes so far have colonized the filter, even though I have holes (admittedly they are small holes) and removed the foil after noccing.. I don't think this is a problem, any contam in my enviroment that'll attack healthy myc would destroy them in the FC anyway, as I understand, the filter is to protect uncolonized substrate, not as much the myc itself ?
