If you were to cover one or a few Jimi Hendrix songs... (please read first post)

it's one thing to cover a song because you think it sounds cool

but it's another to really feel it from the inside



so...if you were to cover a Jimi Hendrix song or few, which would really express yourself the most?


think of this as a let's get to know each other conversation

I'm just curious what your responses will be, and although I love Jimi because his words and music are more universal imo, I hope your choices are somehow personal, if you catch my drift. Please feel free to elaborate or explain your choices as much as you wish

Red House, my favorite song. Its just so Bluesy, it really speaks to me and i feel it pretty strong, infact im going to listen to it right now! :smile:

yeah, this one could potentially seem overdone, but I think if you really feel it, it can be great


"Voodoo Chile (reprise) is another one that's like that. I think many people who attempt to cover this one do so because it is a great song, but lack really feeling it in their bones.
But if you can, its soo badass. "I'm standing next to a mountain, I'll chop it down with the edge of my hand"...imo you have to really feel what that means from the inside to do this song any justice


"Crosstown traffic" is one I love because I can relate to it and it gives me such a liberating feeling

"I don't Live Today" is another I could really get into doing a cover of. Darkly bluesy but like a passionate feeling of almost rage. I love that one

"Burning the Midnight Oil" is another one I really relate to. Either from having the depressed side of the blues, or the contrasting, the feeling I get when it feels like I'm the only one in the world tripping, or living, in the lonesome midnight hours

I played a solo arrangement of The Wind Cries Mary for my Bachelor of Music audition :vaped:

the cool thing about little wing is it allows for some good improv. I especially like the live versions of little wing (Jimi)

I burned a CD for the car today with this song on it.  It's awesome, and so is Red House/almost everything Jimi has done.

which is why I hope for some more personal responses. any song would be good to cover, but imo its better if you really feel the song yourself and itself from the inside

even if its foxy lady, which is also great

Definitely wind cries mary, castles made of sand, little wing, foxy lady, if 6 was 9, voodoo chile, manic depression, red house, hey joe, all along the watchtower, purple haze..... plus all the rest :wink:

good luck! I can play 5 or 6 of these... 2 damn near perfect. Practice and you will be rewarded, check out some youtube lessons, they're a great resource... and free!!

The Wind Cries Mary. That song has been my favorite ever since the first time I heard it. The solo in that song is unbelievable, so simple, but with so much feeling. Everything in that song is awesome, and it alone has ended up being a huge influence on my guitar playing.

Definitely machine gun played at the isle of white. I looked for a youtube clip and couldnt find one. Too bad. I used to get sooo stoned laying in bed watching this performance. This song would nearly bring me to tears. I have yet to see him play with so much feeling. I really wish I had a way to show it to you.

I will burn you a copy of the dvd and send it to you if thats what it takes.

I've seen it. I was asking what would YOU cover, as a personal expression of yourself (his songs are much more universal than "you", but I just mean what songs really speak your heart)

Just pure mind melting psychedelic awesomeness.

Also a super creepy tidbit, at the beginning he "happy new year,hope we have a million more of em, if we can get past the summer...heh heh"

He died in august of that year.

As for what I'd cover, I was always a huge fan of Hear my Train a Comin', sort of a "fuck this shithole I'm outta here" song that meant a lot to me.
