The extremely poor hardware design of Apple products will become apparent when you've opened about a dozen of them, and realized they are designed to be replaced and have a short lifetime.

Let us know how this turns out, I have thrown shit out because of part labor compared to total replacement costs. I fuc@#$g hate transferring shit to a new computer.... SUCKS

Are you shitting me? Over engineered maybe, but poor design? Fuck no.

I'm going purely on the design of my 7 year old 12" Powerbook. It's one of the most incredibly intricate and awesome designs of a laptop I've ever seen.

Simple, No... Engineering marvel, yes...

The day that thing's hard drive fails... Well, i must admit I have no experience with the Powerbook line. Maybe they're alright- I didn't say ALL their products were poorly designed, but like the Mac Pro's with the alluminium body inside and white shell exterior? The snaps break half the time you un-snap them, making reassembly nigh impossible, and if dropped the aluminium frame will break but not the exterior, such that when you open it it falls apart and cannot be put back together.

I also distinctly remember hard drives seemingly acessible through a gap on the battery port wall only to find the hard drive was a half inch too long to be removed that way and the entire case had to come apart. I also remember seeing a number of the newer model aluminium exterior Mac Pro's with hinges basically half the size of what I typically saw, broken, of course, and of course Apple wouldn't send me new hinge brackets (a little piece of aluminium wirth 12 cents ruins a 2000+$ laptop because you can't get replacements)

I am not singling Apple out here. The new Dell XPS studio laptop line is a bitch to take apart without breaking some of the snaps. I had a hell of a time with a vaio laptop once, struggling to figure out why it wouldn't come apart only to find there were screws hidden under manufacture labels.

But really, I have taken apart 100+ laptops. As to where I can take apart and replace the hard drive, monitor, inverter, camera, or even the mother board on a cheap old Dell Inspiron in less than 45 minutes with no risk associated and replacement parts a cheap and readily available, the Mac counterpart is difficult to take apart and put back together, prone to break in the process of doing so, and parts are difficult or impossible to come by. DC jacks on Apple products were oft notably more difficult to desolder and replace than their competitor's, and it didn't make them any tougher.

This is a standard I find unacceptable, as a person who truely owns his electonics, down the their individual components.

And don't start bullshitting me about Apple software either. I had more Apple computers come in with difficult or impossible software issues to solve than any PCs ever did, yes a lot of PCs came in virused to shit and back but that's entirely attriubtable to user error and very easy to fix!.I do not use active virus blocker on my computer and when i scan it every two weeks or so it remains quite free of malware, despite my heavy pirating and torrenting habits.

Once I had an apple comp that needed one of their older OS's to properly function. It had been infected with some sort of terrible whatever, but we spent five weeks trying to get them to send us a legitimate copy of the old OS (and this is a certified repair location) before finally giving up and pirating it. Dell never had any issues sending us OS disks, even for XP months after XP was disco-ed/ furthermore, most middle-aged computers had no issue with Win7Basic, as to where old Apple computers are forever stuck with the operating system generation they were born into, accellerating the inevitability of obsolescence further.

And don't get me started on the stupid fucking wall jacks with the moving piece that kids LOVE to break. Sold a lot of replacements for those, never once had a Dell power supply physically break, and even when the inverter bricks burned out they often sent us an RMA replacement at no cost to the customer.

The drivers are still covered by a patent and are not available to the general public.  These are torx drivers that have five lobes instead of six... not the six lobed torx with the hole in the middle.  However, there are only a few models of Apple laptops that use these to secure the battery.  The trilobe driver, which is easy to find, is much more commonly used by Apple.
