Meditation
    #12961889 -

I have never meditated in my life in as much as I have never sat down and said I am going to meditate now.  I am sure I can read up on it elsewhere but it is interesting hearing real people's experiences instead of some expert trying to be a spiritual guru or something.

For those of you who practice it I had some questions:

1) What are you trying to achieve that a cup of tea or having a cigarette on a park bench or laying in the sun won't do, ie putting your feet up for 10 minutes?

2) What do you do in order to meditate, what are the techniques?

3) What long term benefits have you noticed from it?  Real long term ones not so much spiritual ideas or anything.

4) How often do you meditate, what is your setting and is it a regular thing or something you do when you feel like it?

5) What is the pattern of thought that occurs as you meditate, are you just trying to completely zone out?

1) focus
2)Get comfortable. Relax each part of the body sequentially. Notice/count the breath. Do that for a while. I've gotten to a point where I could hardly tell the difference between up and down.
3)I don't think I've done it regularly enough or long enough to notice any long term benefits. Short term benefits include happiness which can otherwise be a rare thing to attain for me
4) I meditate when I feel like it in my apartment in front of the couch. I don't like the idea of forcing myself to do it regularly although maybe that would be worthwhile if I tried.
5)I don't really zone out but I do become very focused on the wonderful sensation of being alive and breathing healthily. I often have distracting thoughts but that's okay I just roll with it.

Philosophically, the contents of the jar gave no advice.

1.) Meditation is far superior than any of those things you mentioned.
Sure those things relax you and so does meditation.  But meditation is like relaxation on steroids.  You get in synch with the rythym of the planet through meditation.  Not in a metaphysical new-age type of way, but in a real, feelable, standing wave-pulsing/coherent kind of way.

2) My main technique is to just focus on my breath at first, slow it down, and deep.  Then after Ive relaxed a bit, I start focusing on the ringing in my ears.  Everyone has it, we just usually cant hear it that much.  But if you smoke a joint, you can easily close your eyes, and hear the "processing" in your brain.  I just focus on this pitch until it gets louder and louder until before I know it, I cant even feel my body anymore, and it feels like Im pulsing in a sea of energy.  Kinda like,......wooow---wooow----wooow----wooow----wooow.  Sounds kinda like a machine.  This usually will match the 7hz shcumman resonance of earth.

3)  Long term benefits for me have been happiness, able to let go of stress easier, not let little things bother me, be more open to others, allow life to "just happen" as opposed to trying to make things happen. etc etc

4) I meditate everyday.  Usually in my meditation room.  With a cushion, in lotus position.  But sometimes I bike down to the forest and meditate on this giant rock.  My most powerful meditations have been in this spot.  The fresh air, and warm sun really amplifies the experience.

5) My pattern of thought usually goes something like this....
"Ok breath deep"
"In, out, in, out, what am I gonna do to.....shutup"
In, out, in, I wonder what Mike is.....shutup!!"
"In, out, in, out, in, out, in, out, hmmm I wond...shhhhhhhhh"
"In, out, in, out, I really should be.....shhhhhhhhhhh"
"shhhhhhh, in , out, in, out, in, ou.....i.....o.................."
THen once my thoughts have slowed down/stopped, I start hearing the pitch in my head.  This is my key/trigger.  Which usually brings me way deeper.
I focus on this.

spiritual ideas are very important and rewarding for me.

keep in mind spirituality is not religion.

i was told once, 'religion is for people that dont want to go to hell. spirituality are for those who have been to hell and dont want to go back.'

Oh, I am not knocking spirituality if that is what you come to believe.  I am personally just more interested in what concrete mental and physical benefits people have gained as opposed to ideas picked up.

I know what you mean by this. It's a big buzzing and annoying sound. I first noticed this while I was on Salvia. The 2nd time I noticed it was when I really tried to meditate for the first time and took it seriously. I felt my legs buzzing to a frequency too. Some sort of weird energy. Was freaky as hell! Then my cat jumped on me.  :kingcrankey:

Yeah, if you just go with it, eventually your whole body starts vibrating, or pulsing.  Its awesome.

And I finally found a "scientific" reason for why we feel this, when our thoughts die down.
Just google "Meditation and Bose Einstein condensate"

Its not proven yet though, but it makes so much sense.
Specially when you've felt it personally.

1)One form of meditation to develop prolonged concentration, and one to see through to the true nature of everything.

2)Samatha and Vipassana in the Mahamudra tradition of the Kagyu lineage.

3)Increased concentration, greater depth of feeling, and less of an urge to be constantly busy with something. Also, I seem to be much less emotionally volatile, though that may just be a part of getting older.

4)Daily, in my room, for about....I'm going to say 12 years. I'll be 27 in a month, and I think I started meditating with some consistency when I was around 14 or 15.

5)I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but if you're asking about my own mental interruptions, it's usually music playing in my own mind.

Nah, not really, though anything is possible. The changes that came with meditation happened very slowly for me.

1) What are you trying to achieve that a cup of tea or having a cigarette on a park bench or laying in the sun won't do, ie putting your feet up for 10 minutes?

Doing those things instead keeps you dependent on them as a source of gratification. It's something to grasp at. Meditation is like sitting without anything to grasp. I'm trying to achieve attention as opposed to distraction.

2) What do you do in order to meditate, what are the techniques?

I watch the breath, as in the physical sensations associated with it. I pick one, and watch it. I return my attention to it whenever I notice it's somewhere else. That's it.

3) What long term benefits have you noticed from it?  Real long term ones not so much spiritual ideas or anything.

I am less reactive and less judgmental. I actually enjoy 'in-between' moments like waiting somewhere or walking through a door. No word of a lie, I feel grateful for all those moments. My moods are better and people don't annoy me very easily.

4) How often do you meditate, what is your setting and is it a regular thing or something you do when you feel like it?

I go in stints. Often I'm trying to do it every day, but I get in and out of the habit. I don't do it when I don't feel like it.

5) What is the pattern of thought that occurs as you meditate, are you just trying to completely zone out?

Not trying to zone out, just put my attention somewhere and return it there every time it wanders.

I am going to help explain this to you with the help of:
Morihei Ueshiba Founder of Aiki Budo or Aikido

The philosophy of Aikido is that humans are to attain harmony and become intune with their enviornment and/or of nature.

A simple Aikido teaching is that:

To become in harmony with Nature you must first become in tune/harmony with Natures most sophisticated, detailed, and advanced creation.. humans

A person sitting under a tree is not in harmony with nature, hes just lazy. A person MUST become in-tune with themselves before they can attempt merging with their surroundings.

meh it's just an opinion.?

meditation has many purposes, find yours and maybe you'll find happiness
