Secret Chiefs 3 is a Trey Spruance project which is essentially like 6 bands in one. That's one of their few "death metal" songs. And then they have songs like this beside it on the album

Avant-garde :awebig:

well it seems most kids are under the impression that metal is only brutal when it's fast and heavy and loud.  That band has some songs that are almost exhausting after they're through based on the build up of backup instruments and atmosphere.  that's why black metal and it's ilk have the potential for much more than death metal in general effect, most of them rely on creating an atmosphere along with the music.  most stuff you posted is just right in your face and ends up fairly one dimensional because that's all it offers.

99% of Black Metal sounds the same. You can do much more with Death Metal.

For example Abigail Williams IMO put out an album that isn't strictly Black Metal but is hands down better than anything in the genre.

99% of death metal is boring as fuck.  it's just loud and fast and heavy.  so what?
sure a lot of black metal sounds the same, but so does a lot of jazz, blues, classical, rap whatever.  that's a stupid argument.
I appreciate a lot of death metal, but generally people don't go anywhere with it.  you have occasional phenoms like opeth and such, but generally it's all tired.  black metal has evolved into so many more different genres.  as I mentioned before, the best black metal, or even black metal inspired stuff like agalloch etc, relies on buildup and creating an ambience, an atmosphere.  if you're not a musician, it's probably hard to understand that trying to craft an atmosphere at 200bpm all as loud as possible is pretty difficult, and generally not very enthralling.  black metal has always been about atmosphere.  look at ulver's trilogie.  there's 3 albums and technically only one of them is a black metal album.  but it's called their black metal trilogy based on the atmosphere of all of it.  most death metal bands would never try and pull something like wolves in the throne room, with female vocals on certain songs etc.

well cheese is all cheese, some's processed, some's not, some's white some's yellow.  but the important part is there's good and bad, in varying degrees.  you seem to like kraft singles.

I do like kraft singles. great on burgers.

But you see that this music we are arguing about is subjective.
You are not right and nither am I. What we like is what we like
and thats it. That last song you posted was laughable IMO

I knew there was a black metal elitist hiding somewhere around the shroomery

"sure a lot of black metal sounds the same, but so does a lot of jazz, classical, whatever."

Maybe to untrained ears... but the difference here is they AREN'T .... not in the same way two black metal songs often use the exact same chords and chord progressions with slightly... but likely not different picking rhythms.

BTBAM is infinitely more talented than 99.9% of black metal bands in composition, and technicality.. sorry

And I do love me some black metals.

you're talking about extremely traditional black metal sounding similar.  it does.  if you listen to mayhem and darkthrone and emperor, all their early stuff sounds fairly similar because they all lived in the same area and had a shared idea of what they were trying to create.
I'm not necessarily talking about traditional black metal from back in the day.  BTBAM are talented, I'll give them that, but it's all just riffs.  there's no real direction to most of their stuff.  it's just there, loudm fast, and not very interesting.  any production is boring as fuck.

Fair enough - I'll respect your opinion
Bands like Agalloch, Ulver, etc. do create a very powerful atmosphere.

IDK I really just do not like the whole black metal genera.
I hate how most of the vocals sound. Trying to be all creepy and evil.

Where as hardcore / death metal whatever are dudes that go up there
and rock it out.

It's all a matter of preference.
You grow up with guys in metal... eventually they all move to either death or black metal for some reason. Different tastes.
I grew up with a bunch of black metal heads but I'm as death metal as ever.
I have a lot of respect for a lot of black metal bands, but they just don't really do it for me on the whole.
Death metal is just so much more brutal for me. Not that I don't love me some quality Black Metal
