Yep.

As someone else suggested earlier, raise your own. We used to have a firebelly toad also. Raised crickets in a little trashcan with potatoe slices and other shit.

Two reasons. 1) wild insects tend to build up immunities to pesticides that are sprayed, where as captive animals have no resistance to them at all, and a lot of pesticides are bioaccumulative so eventually the captive animal will build up enough pesticide to kill it. 2) wild bugs carry some nasty parasites that can also kill your animal.

As far as breeding crickets goes, fuck that. They take forever to breed/raise to a decent size, the hatchlings can escape easily, they're noisy, and like someone said, they usually smell like shit.

A solution? Quit buying your crickets from pet stores. Find a bait store. If there is a lake or river anywhere near you then they should sell crickets as bait at a much cheaper price. $0.15 per cricket is some ridiculous shit... Most places sell them for a dollar a dozen.

Another alternative is buying mealworms, waxworms, or some other kind of beetle larve. An added bonus is that they have much higher protein content. Whether or not they are cost efficient depends on your pet store or online vendor.

I never once heard the crickets when I was raising them. I dont know if all breeds make tons of noise, but these ones were not noticeable.  We just kept the buggers in a trashcan in the basement. Sure a couple would make an escape, but they are crickets. we'd just catch them and throw them in the cage with the toad.

Beats having to buy 3-4 dozen crickets a week. Mainly a convenience factor opposed to financial

actually this reminds me of when i had a bearded dragon, the crickets from the pet store had mites or something.  Don't think it ever affected my dragon but they were still nasty as hell.

Anyways another option is to do a Fly culture, cut a potato in half stick in a jar and set outside or purhaps even inside, in about a week you should have something growing.  Then put a lid on with a garden hose glued into the lid.  When the larve hatch and they can fly they will go up the hose and into your tank and autofeed your animal.

Seems like it would work anyway

I've been working with an idea like this.

I'm in the process of getting a poison dart frog set up,
they eat fruit flys and the potential of having a jail break seem extremely likely
so I've been considering doing something like this.

Yeah, that'd work great for something like a poison dart frog because wingless fruit flies are easy to raise, but when you have herps that eat larger prey (large geckos, beardies, etc) that won't work.

Why not normal house fly culture?
They're about as big as a cricket, for what is worth. Real easy to grow.... By the millions... and I bet a mix of food could be made so they didn't stink, etc.


Crickets use their wings to make noise, not their legs... :laugh:

Only adults due, I believe both males and females have them, though, it may just be females.

Either way, if you've ever had one lost in your house, they're damn annoying

Yeah, both males and females have wings, but only the males rub their wings together to chirp. And you're right, it's annoying as hell. I just bought some crickets for my Tokay gecko two days ago and the fuckers were chirping nonstop. Luckily the gecko hunted down all the males first and ate them, so no more noise :lol:
