Bass guitar?

I have been playing acoustic and electric guitar for quite some time now. I want to give bass a try. So can someone here who plays bass recommend a good bass guitar for metal music? And is it easy to learn if I already have experience with guitar?

Yes, it should be super easy if you have experience with guitar.  It's just 4 of your 6 strings, just less to think about.

Bass is quite easy to learn if you already have experience with guitar. That is not to say that all bass is easy because there are certain techniques that require a lot of skill and time to learn such as slap or finger style bass. If you do decide to pick it up you will be able to play right off the bat, but you will have to use a pick more than likely, which is not a bad thing but it is normally the sign of an under acomplished bass player. True bass players use two to three fingers in an alternating patern, i.e. using two fingers to play a driving riff on one string. Any modern style bass would be great for metal, maybe something like a Music Man or a Pevey, maybe an Ibanez. Also, playing metal on the bass is way easier than playing it on the guitar and you still get to rock just as hard, if not even harder. :rockon::hairmetal::headbanger::rockman:

I can play with my fingers, and have dabbled in slap. I play with a pick 90% of the time though because I prefer the tone. Neither makes you a "true bass player."

I never said anyone here is a bad bass player or you are a bad bass player if you use a pick but have you ever seen someone play a stand up bass with a pick? Also, Phil Lesh is not the best guy to use as an example of an awesome bass player, when I think good bass players I think of guys like Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, John Paul Jones, and John Entwistle. Anyway, I am just saying that is a standard to play bass with your fingers, not a pick, even though I play with a pick often. I strive to play with my fingers as much as I can because that provides much better tone and is more effcient when one becomes good at it.

Not necessarily more efficient, just a different tone. It's only a matter of preference really.
Lots of amazing metal bass players use a pick, because it produces a more "crisp" sound. It is good for machine-gun like riffs. If you are playing 32nd notes and complex poly rhythms, I'd say it's probably more efficient to use a pick.
It is generally accepted that you use your fingers if you want the "fat" tone.
Different applications for different tones. 
Some amazing bass players use a combination of a pick and their fingers.
Skill level has absolutely nothing to do with it. You can be the god of playing with your fingers, but if you are the god of playing with a pick then it will be just as good.
But yeah it's definitely good to be able to play with both your fingers and a pick equally well.

Yes but you said "true bass players" use their fingers. And now you're saying it's the standard. Based off what, because you can't play a double bass with a pick? Compare rockabilly slap on an upright to double thump on electric, they're both slap yet completely different techniques. You can play an upright with a bow as well, but you don't see anyone playing electric with a bow. Even with fingerstyle there's different technique between the two instruments. Fingers don't give a better tone. It's preference. If I'm playing rock I'll use a pick, if I want something warmer for jazz it's finger style. I don't necessarily disagree with what your points, however you're making very sweeping generalizations that simply aren't true. It boils down to preference and any bass player would do well to absorb all the variety they can.

@OP I don't play much metal so I don't know what brands are good for that style, but you should look for a 5 string with a low B.

Eh, I mean as far as a good bassist that just comes down to preference. Claypool is good, I've seen him live a couple times, but it's just not the kind of music I listen to much anyway. I guess I'm just a huge Deadhead, and I really dig the way Phil plays. The only reason he plays with a pick anyway was when Jerry asked him to play bass in their band, neither had a bass so Jerry told him to practice scales on a guitar.

I play with a pick on occasion, too, though. I've got a couple of picks that are kind of a dense cotton/felt material. They give a nice, fat tone almost like a finger. I don't know if they sell them at any shops near you but you should try one out for sure. Only bad part is I get small amounts of cotton fluff around my pickups if I go at it for a while.
