Pets that eat crickets..

Circkets are expensive!
What do you people who have lizards, and frogs do to keep your animals fed without spending a ton of money on crickets?
Is this an issue for you guys as well?
I'd love to hear a solution...

I remember my dad using cricket traps to catch crickets before going cat fishing.

I'm sure you could do the same to feed your pets. :smile:

My buddy has a tank full of bad ass turtles.
In the morning, especially during this time of the year, a shit load of orange crickets are wandering around outside his house. He usually just throws em in the tank and the turtles devour them. It's quite a sight to see.
I realize this doesn't help you at all, but I felt like sharing.

It depends on how many pets you have,and how much they need to eat.
Around here crickets are 15 cents a piece. That is a lot for a cricket IMHO

I have frogs, I use a fly catcher, for 5 dollars at walmart that, if the proper amount of water is added so it doesn't kill the flies -- it will catch hundreds of flies each day, and my western chorus frogs are very happy and always full. :smile:

I was just wanted to see what other people had done before i said that. When I used to by them crickets, i felt like they didn't get enough, I spent too much money on them -- being like 3 or so dollars every two days... etc

Fly method is cheaper.

I want to grow wingless flies, and maybe sell those cheaper than crickets. They are wayy easier to grow, and have a shorter life cycle.


Do you think selling a flightless variety of house fly would be a decent little home business? It is easier to get thousands of full grown house flies than it is to get crickets that size - plus, I bet they have more protein, And alternatively maggots could be sold for food as well.

I'd start raise my own food source in this situation.
you can probably breed crickets but I'd imagine their chirping would drive you insane

I had a cricket that got into my tent one time while I was camping.
It wouldn't have been so bad but I think that the poor guy had that Restless Leg Syndrome and couldn't afford the medicine. :sad:

As was stated before, breeding your own crickets is always an option. I don't care for them because they stink like ass and are noisy as shit when you're trying to breed them. A lot of folks in the reptile community are turning to roaches as an alternative source of food for their animals. The species Blaptica dubia in particular is bred solely as a food item. These are tropical roaches which cannot breed if the temps are too low (around 68 and under), so chances are that if one escapes (which is already unlikely), it will end up dying in a few days anyway. DEFINITELY look into them as an option. They are cheaper and easier to maintain, make no noise, and they don't smell. You can get a starter colony for fairly cheap as well
