T. Bridgesii tip cutting: How long do I have to wait???
    #12414128 -

Hello!

I am pretty new to gardening with cacti other than just simply watering them. Last week I cut the top inch off the top of one of my bridgesii and have sense let the cutting dry out.

Here is the cutting looking at the cut side and from the top side:

And now i've got a couple questions about this little guy.

First of all, it is only about an inch tall and ~2 inches in diameter. It is starting to shrivel a little bit and i'm worried that it is just a little to small to make it. Is this guy ready to be stuck in some moist soil? It's only been a week since it was cut but I don't want it to dry out too much because I think it will just shrivel up and completely die.

Also, what would be an appropriate method to root such a little cutting like this? I'm thinking either stick it in a small pot of moist cactus soil. Or i've also read about using newspaper rapped around the cutting and misting the paper with water every now and then until it starts sprouting off roots and pups..

Any direction or help for this little project of mine would be much appreciated!

:wutermelon:

I lay my cuttings on their side in a dark corner of a room, give it good ventilation, it will throw roots out on it's own with time.

Then I stick it in soil and let it root for about 2 months before watering.

Given the size of this little cutting I think it may completely dry out before it starts to root at all if I try it like that..

I've read about a need to have the cut end callused up first before it will properly root. Is this true and if so, can it still root without a callus?

A cut of that size can still be rooted. Just stick it into some potting mix once it is calloused, then water in. Leave it to dry out for some time before watering again.

This is what I was planning on doing.. How long does it usually take a cutting to callus to the point where it can be put in soil?

it's been about 7 days..

Give it a few more days so the outer edges callous up like the centre has. You want that green on the edges to be a little more white before putting in soil. After it has calloused just do as Tripsis said. Because your cutting is so small it will probably take some months before it throws out some roots, if it doesn't shrivel up in the process. When taking cuttings from a columnar cactus 6 inches is about the smallest you want to go, any smaller and they seem to take ages to root.

I think rooting times depend on climate too. I had one the same size in a sunny position in the same pot as another cactus. It is outdoors, so was rained on many times, etc. It rooted maybe 1 to 2 months, I didn't really keep a tab on it. It was just the tip that was removed for a graft, so I wasn't worried about whether it actually made it or not.

Well.. just thought I'd update this for reference purposes.

The cutting didn't end up making it. It hadn't put out any sort of roots for two months and I was still hopeful that it would eventually. However, foolishly, I wasn't thinking properly and put the cutting out in full sun with my other bridgesiis and it got fried in the sun. It turned a dark brown, almost reddish color and I knew it was a goner. Eventually it completely shriveled up and dried out.

I might take a picture later. But case closed unfortunately

I lost a good cactus with a silly mistake.

RIP
Small cuttings have small chance, you should have given it more size to hold on.

It's too late to save it even with grafting I bet.

powered rooting hormone has worked get for me.  Dust a little amount on the callus of the cutting prior to potting.
