Ground BR v.s. Store Bought BRF
    #12874388 -

So I noticed that at work we sold brown rice, so I brought it home and chopped it up and put it up against some BRF I have.

I tested two LCs with this. (also since I was using approx 4-5ccs per jar, I went light on water in my mixture.)

After 3 days I've noticed that the store-bought BRF "showed" quicker. After 12 days, I have noticed that the growth in the ground BR is much more aggressive and rapid, as these jars are about to enter consolidation. The BRF jars still need a few more days.

I would put pictures up, but my fucking camera is MIA after vacation a few weeks ago.

I do, however, keep planning to test LCs like this. One on ground BR and one on BRF. I will continue to post my results into this thread, and eventually with try different brands and such.

If you have any experience you would like to add here, please do.

Werd!!!  I like to leave my brf a lil chunky, seems to colonize a lil faster.  I m kinda nub still, and count on my jars, while i am learning bulk teks.
Cool thread.

Personally, I have never used brown rice flour (BRF) because when I first got into this stuff I couldn't get my hands on any (late 90s).

I have always, ALWAYS used just plain, 100%, whole-grain brown rice (I think the brand I usually use is called mahatma?) and it colonizes quickly and aggressively (with South American varieties of cubensis, anyway. Asian varieties are pretty slow). Once it is colonized I use it for spawn into a bulk substrate consisting of wholesale, plain, un-dyed mulch from the local landscape supply center. Beautiful.

No. Not at all.  It has always worked great for me.

To rapidly boiling water add the rice and bring the water back up to a boil. Once boiling (you will have to adjust your heat so it doesn't boil over) again, let it boil for 8 minutes and stir occasionally so it doesn't cook to the bottom of the pot, etc. Immediately dump into a strainer, let it drain for 1 minute, then put it in your jars. (I usually fill jars anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 full so that there is room to shake them up without killing myself).

Once they are pressure cooked, I need to take them out as soon as atmospheric pressure is reached so that I can break the rice loose or else it clumps together (obviously, I need to use a rag or pot-holder). But once you break it up it is good to go. Let it cool and add spores...

You can buy brown rice and grind it up your self you know, many people say it will ruin your coffee grinder but I have been using the same one for well over 2 years now, I find whole Brown Rice has a horrible texture compared to rye

I appreciate the tip, and agree that the rice does have a terrible texture compared to some rye jars I've seen, but I guess I have just gotten used to it over the years.

I want to get a small blender for liquid mycelium syringes, so maybe I'll just get a coffee grinder while I'm at it.

I have been doing this stuff for years but was in the army for a while and obviously had to get out of it. I am just now getting back into it pretty seriously, mostly edible/medicinal species, and want to start trying out some new things...

ANYONE, Can you point me to a website or a store that sells 5-10 lbs. of the brown rice so I can grind my own and save money by buying in quantity? I only have 1 lb. bags of Bob's Red Mill Brand, brf. That is getting to pricey to keep getting that from my grocery store...also, anyone ever use the "quilted" pattern type style 8 oz, ball jars? any success?

Forget BRF. Rice Bran, baby. Rice Bran can be purchased from grain and feed stores in 50 pound bags for 40 dollars. No grinding. If your local grain and feed suppliers do not carry Rice Bran. Inquire. They will be able to point you in the direction of a source.

Rice Bran will perform just as good as BRF. Rice Bran is slightly more nutritions then ground BRF. Due to the fact that Rice Bran still contains the flax seed husk in the mix. A grains husk is where the majority of said grains nutritional value is located. Also, Rice Bran is every bit as contaminate resistant as BRF. Givin' the correct parameters and provisions to sterilization are provided.
