I bought some (garden plus brand)compost at lowes 2 weeks ago and it doesnt seem like the mycelium wants to colonize it. Everyone talks about how mycelium runs through poo in a few days and it seems like the mycelium is only colonizing parts of the straw and a little of the poo. So I just bought some more manure. This time its green thumb brand and it says cow manure with humus. I dont know if it will work but has anyone had success with this stuff. I dont know if the humus part is good or not but it was only like 2 buxs, so I bought it. I live in farm country, but im kinda weirded out about going to some farm and asking someone for poo. Plus I dont know how to tell if it need to be leached or not. Any insight would be appreciated.

If the stuff you have doesn't work, don't hesitate to visit some stables for horse poo. They're generally very nice people who you probably wouldn't even have to talk to. If you pull up and get out with a bin and a shovel, they'll know why you're there and probably just nod and go about their business. If they do inquire, it's for your roses that are near your vegetable garden and you're trying to keep things as organic as possible.

I experimented with the store bought "manure", and had mixed results. The stuff I used was very heavily composted, with sticks and rocks in the mix as well. I used this stuff strait out of the bag with some sterilized vermiculite to lighten up the mix so it wouldn't form a mud ball. Water content was almost impossible to get right due to the consistency of the manure, but the vermiculite did help a bit. Colonization was slower than usual, but it eventually ripped through it.
Flushes were far below expected or what I have experienced with real manure or straw (but still greater than what I have experienced with strait grains). It is really not worth your effort to use this since you said you have farms available close to you. If you don't have access to true manure or straw, this could be the way to go.
