Please help identify, Gymnopilus spectabilis??
    #12869951 -

Habitat:
I found these mushrooms growing from the ceiling of a wooden shed in the Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming.

Gills:
The gills are yellow/orange and are spaced close together.

Stem:
The stems are thick and fleshy, yellowish with brown fibrous streaks running up the stem.

Cap:

The caps vary in size and shape. The smaller caps are yellow/orange and have a more conical shape, while the larger caps are yellow/orange and more shelf-like. Some caps have brownish markings on the top.

Spore print color:
The spores are rusty orange.

Bruising:
I have not yet noticed any bruising.

Other information:
There is an orange ring around the stem under the cap (appears to be spores stuck to it). There are several mushrooms growing together in a cluster. Also, there was a large amount of rust-orange "dust" (spores, I assume) collected under the mushrooms in a cobweb.

Definitely Gyms. Could be G. spectabilis (junonius) or G. luteus. Maybe another one. I'm thinking G. luteus. How big are the biggest caps? Can you post good close-ups of the annulus? Cut one of the smaller ones in half and note the flesh color and wait and see if it turns blue/green.

If it hasn't already, it probably isn't gonna show. They're probably one of the many inactive Gym species. Sorry if I got your hopes up. Keep tryin'!

Thanks for your opinion Bobzimmer!

After cutting a smaller stem in half, it bruised a darker orange-ish color.

I have read several documents that said Gymnopilus Spectabilis does not bruise blue, does anyone know if this is true?

Yes, that is true. G. spectabilis is a larger mushroom (typically) than what you have and has more of an annulus.

I appreciate the help! The largest cap in the bunch was 5.5 inches in diameter. I went out and harvested the largest one, there was some dark bruising around the very bottom of the stem.

Why didn't you say that before? That certainly falls within the range of G. spectabilis (G. junonius), but the stem seems too thin and the annulus not large enough. I would expect G. luteus to show some blue/green bruising. Some inactive Gyms bruise brown.

i find those to look more towards the luteus type:thumbup:
they have long - sometimes curved more narow stems -
just like the OP's finds

The only gyms ive found and think are true BLG's are GINORMOUS all around
i have seen luteus with huge 7"+ caps too
But my blg's like n my sig pic are the LARGEST ive encountered
i thought they were fake the first time i found them
but with the blg's i saw this a nice pinner aborted and turning nice blue green:biggrin:
All gyms ive found bruise very faintly if at all-
its different on every flush - and every season
but you'll see the bright vibrant pure yellows turn to magenta grey green:thumbup: Then you kno you got some hidden majic:wink:
check out these pics of my luteus i "halved" from this spring.....
Also keep n mind those the ones the OP found look to be quite mature n large
and gyms that big usually show the least amount of evident bruising
Cool finds man
Fucking hope i find some rafter gyms here soon:rotfl:

I am always amazed that people wanna find gymmies.  The bitterness doesn't bother me, but the gas does. I could use those things to power a 3 megawatt generator!

Id say they get their name for invoking lots of laughter n giggling

and to add one more thing...........its important too
you "the OP" prob shudnt really consume those gyms due to the fact they could be growing from really old treated wood of some sorts
unless you are 100% positive the wood is somehow clean don't consume
could be some really really nasty shit n the wood:thumbup:

Hey guys, I went out and picked a few smaller caps and just let them sit for a few days, there are blue/green spots appearing on the caps and towards the base of the stem. Does this help in identifying?

I never would have thought about the wood they are growing on causing problems.

Thanks for the help and advice!

If there is true bluing of any sort, then yes.. your mushrooms are probably active.

Post pictures of the blue bruising you claim.
