Recent Film Soundtracks

Have been amazing.

There will be blood, Shutter Island and Book of Eli have had the sickest most intense songs tracks.

A totally new breed of scores.

the (semi) recent film scores that have really stuck out for me is The Fountain and Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes wasnt anything ground breaking but it was just really different from anything Hans Zimmer has done before that it stood out.

and kinda in the other direction.. if youve never seen the original Andromeda Strain from 1971 you should def see it.

The Andromeda Strain has pretty much no score at all but that lack of soundtrack adds to the atmosphere of the film in a way that could never be replicated with a traditional score.

there is an unwritten rule with filmmaking.. "show. dont tell."

The Andromeda Strain shows you whats going on but lets the audience figure it out and come to their own conclusions.

much like Primer, it assumes its audience is intelligent enough to think for themselves.

sorry for the tangent.. im a total film nerd.

This thread is officially for long winded discussion of film soundtracks.. So It is just the place for you.

I've been meaning for years to watch Andromeda Strain, I'ma download it neow.

Films seem to be stripping down the soundtracks, which is a great thing...  When you barely notice it there is best.

Crossing my fingers that these very effective, original uses stick around, opposed to filling it up with top 40 crap, played just below the dialog, or raised up during action.

true.

i only mention The Andromeda Strain because 1) the lack of soundtrack is deafening and 2) i rewatched it recently and its still in my head  :awesome:

unrelated to the soundtrack (or lack of) there is one shot sequence in the beginning where the scientists are looking through the town for survivors. the split screen that the director decided to use is absolutely PERFECT for the situation/film. such an amazing shot..

ive not seen the remake. the original is amazing though.

agreed. although when done well it can be fantastic.

in recent memory.. the ending to The Wrestler when Guns N Roses' Sweet Child Of Mine was playing was really great. fortunately, Mickey Rourke was a friend of Axel so they were allowed to use it (historically, Axel doesnt allow that song to be played in movies/tv/commercials/etc).

thats two Aronofsky films ive named

oh and one of my favorite movies ever is The American Astronaut.

it is a scifi, western, musical but its not constructed the way a normal musical is set up. the actors dont sing their dialog, songs have just been put in to accentuate the current scene.

one of the big things that i love to watch with that movie is the lighting. the director (Cory McAbee) plays with shadows a lot. it was shot in black and white on really grainy film stock which is such a subtle element of the film but, again, it adds a whole lot to the atmosphere of the finished product.

fair warning though.. not many people ive shown this movie to have liked it. i think its fantastic but figured id just throw it out there.. its very different from anything else youve probably seen.

heres the trailer:

Never heard of that.  I'll check it out.

Pi integrated already existing music in a brilliant way.

I also gotta Say, SPUN; what a great job By Billy Corgan.  The music is almost as important as the hotties.

DO IT.

I have watched it at least 10 times, Some of the acting is TOP NOTCH, some is total garbage, lol.

It is a great looking film, with plenty of entertainment value.

Yep, totally agree on the three you mentioned.

There Will Be Blood in particular was quite groundbreaking to say the very least, love me some Jonny Greenwood/Radiohead.
I was actually quite bummed when they disqualified his Academy Award nod at the last minute due to him sampling some strings on the score.

I mean I'm usually against silly awards for art, but that one deserved to take the motherfucking cake, burn it to a crisp, and eat it too.

Also, not so recent though, I enjoyed the soundtrack to Amelie and was pleasantly surprised to hear the composer, Yann Tiersen, lent his hand on the new Sage Francis album, "Li(f)e", along with other greats like Markus Linkus (RIP) of Sparklehorse.
MMmmm

If I were him, I wouldn't care much.

Prolly exstatic to just come up with all that; to that movie! A dream.

Indeed.

Have you heard his score to "Body Song"? Quite interesting and inventive as well to say the least, not quite as dark as the score for "There Will Be Blood" though.
