I have only seen a few John Waters films --not the early stuff 'cept for Hairspray-- and I think he is a very sane and compassionate filmmaker --especially compared to the corporate B.S. that Hollywood puts out. Actually, I think John Waters is a genius.

I don't know if any of these could be classified as independent, but here are a few of
my favorite non traditional Hollywood movies.

Naked Lunch
Nowhere
The Anniversary Party

try some from down under -
'bad boy bubby' is a classic, the scene where he fux his mother emptied the theater. i should say one of the scenes, they do it more than once.
also some early stuff from the guy who directed lord of the rings, 'meet the feebles', a muppets ripoff involving porn, drug use and mutilation, he did another flick called 'bad taste' kind've a sci-fi evildead.
very rare from australia is "smoke 'em if you got 'em", some guys hold a party in a bombshelter to celebrate the end of the world via nuclear war, a rather novel form of drug abuse involves, pulling a bong and then sticking one's head in a microwave oven on full power for that extra buzzzzz.

from japan, anything by shinya tsukamoto.
he made his first movie whilst in uni - 'tetsuo - iron man' a guy on a crowded train gets injected by some stranger in the leg, you never see who, he wakes up the next day with bits of metal growing out of his head, it goes off from there. kind've a japanese eraserhead.
the sequel -'tetsuo II - body hammer' is equally awesome.
also from shinya is 'tokyo fist' and 'gemini' creepy, tense and weird.

if you really want to put images into your head that will not do you any good see
troma's 'combat shock', by far the nastiest, most negative, brutal and all-round fucked up 90 minutes on celluloid.
hope these will please.

Great movies.  I will have to check those australian flicks out.  I have seen Tetsuo but never the sequal.  And I'm not sure if I have seen that troma flick but I have seen a LOT of troma movies.  I imagine if it is the worst of the troma flicks then it has to be disgusting.   Thanks for the tips.  Ever here of Un Chien Andalou (i believe thats the spelling)  It is An andaluvian Dog or something.  Supposed to be the gruesomest movie ever.  filmed in 1936? it is all short clips of killings and torture.  I have never found it.  Havent thought to check amazon though.  :P  Also for creepiness.  Freaks.  made in early 40's i believe.  Must see.

nice shot of an eye being sliced open, pretty good for its era. only a couple of nasty bits, mostly just spaced out.......all that absinthe. freaks is definitely worth seeing.
another shocker is 'even dwarves started small' very early werner herzog movie, hahaha ridiculous movie.
these are from jodorowsky movies -

One that I have not seen listed yet is "Living In Oblivion"
It stars Steve Buschemi and chronicles the movie making process from a crazed directors standpoint. Anyone seen it?

Oh yeah, so far it seems as if I am the only one here who thinks Donnie Darko was not so great. Good concept but very messy. alot of pointless fill scenes too. But that is just my opinion.

Big budget: Fight Club, Fear and Loathing, American History X, American Beauty, Death to Smootchie was pretty good too.

I totally agree, Donnie Darko is probably the most original movie that I have ever seen (story wise).

"Pi (faith in chaos)" and another film by the same director, "Requiem for a Dream" blew me away.
