"Little Dieter Needs to Fly" by Werner Hertzog Is a great independent movie. I would put that at the top of my list right now.

Just saw the Canadian premiere of 'Mutant Aliens' by Bill Plympton. Violent, perverse, twisted, sick, pornogrpahic and wonderful. On the slim chance that its playing at a theatre near you, go see it.

Waking Life Grass
Also check out Vanilla Sky, even though its not an independent film, it is definetely appealing to anyone who likes these kind of movies. Try checking out your local art film theater, and see what they have playing.

"The Bible and Gun Club" by Daniel Harris is a hilarious satire of the American Dream gone haywire. It is a cinema-verite style pseudo-documentary in black and white about a group of traveling salesmen who specialize in the two products mentioned in the title. It will make you laugh. It will make you squirm. It is well made. It is also hard to find apparently. If you are interested pm me.

Seconded Nominations: Donnie Darko-although not really independant, it's mirimax Waking Life Eraserhead
Further recommendations: Dead Man, Ghost Dog or Down by Law (Jarmusch) Siddhartha El Mariachi The seven Samurai Breathless
Are you looking for films that are specifically independant, or just quality films that don't follow the traditional hollywood formula?

I was going to ask this same question. I usually like indy films but that doesn't mean that ALL indy films are good. Just like some major studio pictures don't suck. Recent examples; Fight Club, Fear and Loathing, Beautiful Mind, Life as a House. All outstanding films even though they were big budget studio pics. And also where do foreign films fit? They aren't really indy and some are major studio pics in that country but I have seen them included as indy films. City of Lost Children, Man Bites Dog, Seven Samurai, etc are excellent films but only Man Bites Dog could be considered an independent. The other 2 had huge budgets, backing, stars, etc. Not that I'm nitpicking or anything
2 indies that I haven't been able to see but have heard great things about are Pi (mentioned earlier) and The Delicate Art of the Rifle. And the newer release Storytellers (also mentioned) sounds very good.
Well my additions for awesome indy films would be; Man Bites Dog Evil Dead (yes that evil dead) Blair Witch Project (best horror film in recent history, new horror movies generally suck) Waking Life (already listed but it is great) Dark City (might not be classified as a true indy but it was better than Matrix and it was low budget)
thats all for now.

i'm glad john waters got a mention somewhere. check out where the indie film movement went haywire. early john waters movies - best known is 'pink flamingoes' review goes - "Lewd! Shameless! May God forgive its makers for concocting such a vulgar, offensive mess! And may audiences the world over be forever grateful." — Philadelphia Daily News, September, 1973
and you can see clips from it at http://www.flf.com/pink/media.htm
plenty of others from mr waters - polyester (with 'odorama'), multiple maniacs (a tribute to the charles manson family), desperate living and female trouble.
theres also alexandro jodorowski from chile, i started a thread with stills, in this forum, asking if anyone was into him but nobody answered, which indicates people here know fuck all about indies from the 70's . the dude won the cannes film festival around '75 with el topo.
ever heard of 'in a glass cage' 1985. when i saw it the cinema was full, within 10 minutes all the women left 5 minutes after that there were only 3 people left in the place - me, alone and 2 dudes down in the front row, i didnt know these guys but without doubt they were tripping, they laughed the entire film. i'm sure they were never the same again. my girlfriend was waiting for me when i walked out, still in tears, she wanted to break up with me for watching the entire film. she told me that all the women that had walked out were screaming at their boyfriends for staying in there a minute longer than they did. the cinema was a private film club in stockholm, its on vid but i doubt its ever been shown publicly, at least for more than one screening. one review describes it as an unwatchable masterpiece. i agree, it really is an excellent film but the images and subject matter come from the darkest, most fucked-up corners of the human psyche.
btw anyone ever been to the cannes film festival? i stumbled in about 7 years ago, there were stark naked pornstars and wannabees everywhere. you don't get to see any movies tho, unless u have credentials.

Aww god NOOOOOO Not John waters!!!!!! Anybody but John Waters. Sorry but I just can't get into his stuff. Some of it will be ok and I am starting to enjoy it and then WHAM people are licking furniture and it throws others onto the floor. WHA??!! Then another movie is sailing along and out of nowhere a giant lobster starts fucking a woman! HUH!?!? I have a friend who loves waters so Ive watched most of it but just don't care that much for it. The sex is great and weird but sorry.
On to this glass cage I will write back after I get home from work gotta go. OK heres the edit. I have never heard of this In a Glass Cage movie. It sounds like something some friends and I would be very interested in seeing. I will have to try and find it. Any other oddities that you know of you can pass off to me. I am always looking for new dementia.
