Early Summer Inocybe calamistrata with powerful bluing
    #12842170 -

They have the same expensive bakery aroma only more bluing, perhaps because they were aged, water-logged a bit, and were probably in the shade and well secluded.

Found July 2nd, 2010, in South Sound. Note: This species is considered unhealthy, toxic, with the ability to harm your body. It is NOT considered psychotropic.

All the pictures are underexposed, did you have the exposure compensation turned down?

Yes, almost to -2. I'm still learning.

The bluing is real though.

They definitely made their impression.

Yup, the W A.

Alongside a pathway in the woods on a college campus, although I couldn't articulate the technical names of the plants and trees growing around the Inocybes.

If I can eventually gain the respect of the right people with a GC/MS machine, I will see if a chemical breakdown reveals no mycotoxins and the presence of psilocybin. If my common sense is accurate, I will be proven wrong.

Or maybe kind of blue-green.

They don't stain blue where damaged, they just are blue at the stem base.

I like these mushrooms a lot.  Please post some micrographs.  They are likely to contain muscarine.

Set the exposure compensation to around +.5 to +1 when taking pictures of dark brown mushrooms.

No. To -.5 to -1, actually. Light subjects = overexpose, dark subjects = underexpose
See e.g. here http://www.shortcourses.com/tabletop/lighting1-10.html

Negative.  When you have dark mushrooms on a light background you need to set the exposure compensation to something positive.

If you are phorographing a light mushroom on a dark background you need to set the exposure compensation to something negative.  Any time you photograph a deadly white Amanita it will be washed out unless you underexpose.

I'll intentionally try both settings and write them on a tiny piece of paper and include that in the shots next time I'm out. I wonder if the camera brand/model could be an important factor as well.

I understand where you're coming from; in that case, you're compensating for the background. If you use spot metering on the mushroom or the background is of the same luminance as the subject, then my statement is true. In the case of the photos posted here, you'd want to underexpose, but not by 2 stops. Overexposing would in this case result in washed out areas.

no psilocin then i get ya, but what if it was a speciemen that did have some psilocin in it? would it bruise blue over the natural blue green? it is said they are inconsistently active, is this true or just wishful thinking?

:awesome:

Notice that there's a difference between some of the individual spores and their shapes. The spore print itself was like the type of rust you'd see on an old truck. The individual spores, when not overlapping, show a clear to rust-color variation (some might say there's yellow and brown in there too).

Its cool how the spores are inequalateral, they are elipsoid in face view and thinner in side view.  Reminds me a little of red blood cells.

Can you find any cystidia?
