Adding a new hardrive to a laptop??

So, my old laptop died on me a few days ago, so I got a new one yesterday.

What I want to do is, take the files from my old hard-drive and import them to the one I'm currently using.

Can anyone explain simply how to do this, or point me to a link? (I'm technically-challenged) Can I have both plugged in at the same time, or do I have to remove the current one to install the other?

1. Backup important files to USB stick
2. Remove old hdd
3. Put in new hdd
4. Reinstall operating system (Windows, Linux, whathaveyou)
5. Put back files.
Done.

You could also skip step 1, put the old hdd in a portable enclosure (which you'll have to buy/borrow) and transfer the files in step 5 using the old hdd instead of the usb stick.

Another alternative is to 'duplicate' the old hdd to the new one, using disk imaging software such as Norton Ghost. Although it seems like the easiest solution, it usually isn't and you can expect several performance and stability issues, especially if you're using Windows.

That depends a great deal on what you mean by "died".

luvdemshrooms has a point though; it depends a bit on how broken your laptop is. In my reply, I assumed the hdd is normally accessible and the laptop can be started into the operating system so you can transfer files and whatnot.

It would be easier to help with some actual details.

What died? Does the laptop boot? Is the video not working? Did the keyboard crap?

Please define "died".

I just can't get it to boot. It brings up a blue screen, and does nothing else.
I've discussed the issue at length with a technician earlier, but it made no sense to him. He just said that it it was probably a hardware failure, but he didn't think it was the HDD.

I know the guys at the computer shop downtown will convert an HDD into an external drive. That's one alternative if you run into any trouble with hard drive swapping. But I'd get the hard drive tested before trying anything expensive or time-consuming with it.

An unbootable computer sounds like a bad MOBO, but the HDD could still be fried.

Will it boot with a boot disk? Such as an original Windows (or Linux) install disc?

As you clearly have access to a functioning computer, download Ubuntu (or any other flavor) and see if you can run it from the disc (the install program will ask if you want to run it from the disc or install it).

If it works, could be the hard drive. If it doesn't, look elsewhere for your problem.

A BSOD during startup is inconclusive; could be software as well as hardware. Follow luvdemshrooms's advice and try to boot the system with a live Linux disk. Try to recover any important files. Also perform a memory check, which can be run from e.g. the Ubuntu live CD. Then try to reinstall Windows/Linux on the original hard drive. If you keep running into problems, note them and try to spot a pattern, using the input from experts. If this is a hardware issue, possible culprits are the hdd, the mainboard and the memory. If it's a software issue, it's likely to be related to a malfunctioning driver, an aborted installation of updates or a virus. In other words: nearly anything is possible. Replacing the hdd at this point might help, but it might just cost time and money. It's your call.

I've tried using a boot disk, any buttons I press just brings me to a screen which says 'please wait'.

It could be a number of things. Back when I used to work at a school repairing laptops, the RAM going bad was the most common problem aside from kids dropping their laptops and ruining the HDD. Does the harddrive make horrible clicking, grinding, or beeping noises? Are you able to run chckdsk?
