WiFi question
    #12773839 -

So I was wondering is there a way that I can broadcast a wifi signal that is picked up from that device. Like if I get wifi in my kitchen but not my living room is there some kind of product or something that can pick up the signal and strengthen it to reach the living room?

Either you have a large house, or a really bad router.

I would invest in an "N" style router.

You can also use a normal computer with two wifi cards to accomplish the same thing.  or even a router and a wifi card.  Win 7 makes it stupidly easy.  (compared to Linux... =P )

Well, difficulty is a relative term.

Well, One click in a GUI interface called "bridge Connections" compared to fucking around with different programs to see if they do what I want, then fucking around with iptables, then fucking around with a proxy, and finally giving up is considered "stupidly easy" in comparison to me.  But I do love Linux, I just haven't been able to use it as my main OS (wish I could)  so most of my skills have gone soft with disuse...

Long sentence short: one click in Windows compared to hours of searching, experimenting and finally failing on linux.  If I knew what I was doing, yeah, It would probably be just as easy.  But I don't, and since there is no GUI that I can find, It is beyond my mediocre skill level.

Honestly I wish Windows was based on Unix.  It would be a lot more logical.  Plus I do love the CLI!  nowhere else can you delete everything on your computer in one fell swoop!

yeah the windows filesystem is horribly inefficient.

and i like being able to see all of the options for an application listed in one text file. trying to find an option hidden in weird submenus is a pain in the ass.

there is def a learning curve but i think the *nix way is just a lot more logical.

Weird discussion. Why would you use a complete pc as a wifi relay station? Just reposition the existing access point so that it covers the full area you need access in, or add an access point to the network and configure it as a relay for the main access point.

hes trying to get a signal from his neighbors house. doesnt sound like he has physical access to the router.

Because the original wifi signal is not coming from your wifi router.
It is a simple, easy, cheap way to rebroadcast a signal that is not your own.

It's horribly inefficient in terms of energy and space consumption.

yeah, your way is horribly inefficient in terms of money.  I'm not saying it is the best way, just the easiest and cheapest.  Not everyone can afford the options that you listed.  (I can't, for one)

How's picking up an access point someone left in the trash 'expensive'? A spare access point is about as easy to come by as a spare pc these days. But ok, nuff said, I made my point.
