Little kids forced to watch TV at school
    #1274891 - 02/03/03 02:27 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

According to a Teacher magazine article from the February, 2003 issue:

"To Ms. Ehrenfeld: This morning I observed that during the morning news program, you and your students were engaged in activities other than watching television."

So began the official letter of reprimand placed in my personnel folder by the principal at the elementary school in Maryland where I was teaching 3rd grade at the time. Odd as the accusation was, it was made even odder by the fact that my students were reading when the principal caught them not watching television. She had walked in, and there they were, sitting as silently as a group of 3rd graders can, every one of them absorbed in a book.

What they were supposed to be doing was watching our school's morning news show, an exercise in terminal boredom [...]

[...] The TV incident could be chalked up to the idiosyncrasies of one principal if I had not since heard stories of teachers at other schools who've received similar reprimands. Channel One, a news program that reaches 8 million children in 12,000 schools across the nation, is particularly insidious because it's peppered with commercials and product endorsements. I know of one teacher who was ordered to have his students watch the program after he'd turned his classroom's television off. This fellow came up with an interesting solution. Obeying the letter of the law, if not the spirit, he would turn the television on but leave the volume all the way down. Then he'd sit in front of it, wearing an absurdly huge hat that blocked the screen, and read to his students from Shakespeare. If only I had thought of that!

Man, I remember Channel 1. A bunch of bullshit. It's very little news, and what news there is is biased 10x more than CNN. Brainwashing tactics if you ask me.

Yea xactly, it is so very strange the level of brain washing though. I mean are these principals being paid somehow to allow such absurd things to happen. I really wonder what happens to people once they get into positions that require them to assert some authority.

Many politicans do this, but not all. I know that there must be people alive that know about not accepting things which are not based on facts or truth.

Its very strange. I just heard a short story about how in California there is something which makes home schooling not legal. Yes, that means you can not teach your own children in your own home unless you are an accredited teacher. Crazy ass shit. Its really really fucked up. Haha damn.

I actually think that's a good idea. If you are going to teach someone, you should know how to teach. I wouldn't want my dad doing surgery on me........

For the most part its not that big of a deal. There are plenty of guides and books that can help the parent along. Esp. for the elementary level. There are tests given by the state that serve as an evaluation of how well your teaching is going. Even if the parent is not that smart as long as they finished high school, they should know enough to teach elementary level work. Then they could let the brainwashing start at a later age at least. And anyway the trick is for the rent to declare thier home a private school, and then not have to worry about the creds.

Higher level instruction would have to be done by a teacher or somekind, then college. But at least the kids would miss all that DARE bullshit, and a bunch of other force fed bullshit.

Its just funny how even in my lifetime things have gone so far downhill so fast. Parents have to watch what thier kids are involved in at school as much as possible. I wonder why there is so much more violence and shit in school, maybe because they implemented no-prayer in schools, no commandments. Now even if you dont believe in God or any such thing, at the very least there was a basic thought of some kind of moral ground. Now the kids have to listen to gay teachers, who are allowed to talk about thier gayness in front of the classroom.

I dont want a fucking queer talking to my child in the developing stages about the fact that there is such a thing as an "alternative lifestyle".

Anyway FUck the police!!

Woah, I didn't know you were Faldwell. Nice to meet ya.

Ahahahahahah, "listen to gay teachers who are allowed to talk about their gayness in front of the class room"

What, do you think your kids will catch gay? The funny thing is that because of your homophobia, your children will probably rebel against your fears, and turn out gay, just because you were so against it.

I don't know about that, but I was on homeschooling for two of my highschool years. I had to go in for one hour a week to get new assignments and help ......from an accredited teacher....if needed.

Just to let all of you know that there is an alternative to highschool, and apparently middleschool now....

I agree with bowlkiller. I don't think that would be any more appropriate than teaching religion, or "No sex before marriage" ethics should be taught at home. The parents have the right to teach thier kids that homosexuality is wrong if they want to, and it's not the government's place to interfere with that.

Yeah, but read the rest of his post- he also thinks Christian prayer should be mandatory and blames school violence on the absence of the Ten Commandments. So his argument clearly comes not from an idealistic, libertarian anti-government-interference position but from a bigoted right-wing fundamentalist position.

He isn't arguing against schools bringing up homosexuality in sex-ed classes (and, like abortion, it's a big enough apart of our society that it seems silly to just pretend it doesn't exist) but rather against his kids being taught by "fucking queers."

I guess it's also 'ok'- if rather backwards and sad- for parents to teach their kids that interracial marriage is wrong in their own homes, but to me this is comparable to wanting to pull them out of public school rather than allow them to be taught by "fucking nigger-lovers."

I definitely don't agree with most of what he said. (I did read the post).

Teachers should keep theirsexual habits to themselves, and not share any of it with the students. Teaching them not to hate anyone is fine in my book, but I would say anything involving sexual morality should be left out completely.

Teachers most definately should keep their opinions to themselves. I don't care if the teacher is gay, envoronmentalist, or a complete libertarian. Teachers' job is to educate children so the kids can form their own opinions.

Channel one is a fucking joke. It's ten minutes of commercials followed by
two minutes of "news". Channel One bribes the schools by buying them TV's and
they gain access to kids so they can sell ad space to marketers. It's absolutely
disgusting that commercialism is happening in a place that should be focusing
on education.

I have a funny story. When I was in 11th grade, one of my friends painted a
painting that had a subliminal anti Channel One message in it. When you looked at
it, it just looked like a Channel One symbol with some weird splotches behind it.
But, when you looked closer, the splotches said "Fuck". So the painting
basically said "Fuck channel one". My friend sent it in to Channel One and they
showed the fucking thing!!! It was funny as hell.

Also I have read (don't have the source now) that by law channel one must sell anti-drug commercial space for half the regular price. (or something similiar)

The message is crystal clear - a 12-year-old who drinks a few times a week and whose grades are good has no problem with alcohol. Notice that Channel One never mentioned that it is illegal for young people below 21 to drink alcohol.

Why are people so uptight about this?  My father let me sip his beer when I was small, and I got a 'birthday beer' since I was 10.  I am now 27 and have only been drunk once.  I average one drink a month.  Instead of saying NO! why not teach responsibility?  Maybe it's because average parents are too lazy/busy to really raise their children   I hope my kids will have enough information to make 'correct' decisions on their own and not have me following them wherever they go.  I guess I will see as time goes on.

I think the problem is, is that televisions in our school systems seems to be condoning activities for teens that are "technically" illegal.
