Breaking Open the Head

I was curious if anybody has read this book. It is very good with a chapter dealing with Fly Agaric and the world of the fairy folk. I was wondering if anybody else has had similar experiences with mythological or even smurf like beings?

Read it about 6 months ago. Bit disappointed that most of it was a rehash of standard drug history but some good personal parts particularly his experience with the Bwiti people.

Never had any experience with fly agaric. There is a fascinating book about it called "Magic mushrooms in religion and alchemy" where he explains a lot about how to use it correctly and his experiences with it.

Met the author at a reading here in NY. Kind of a strange guy--a little bit arrogant and standoff-ish. Although I somewhat agree with Alex about the book I think the failings have more to do with the fact that there's really very little new that people can say about psychadelics. What's nice about this book is that it does it in a way that makes it accessible to mainstream audiences, was put out by a major publisher, and also got a good write-up in the NY Times Sunday Book Review. So at the very least it is "spreading the word" in a way that few other people can match. It also does a good job of integrating the psychadelic experience into the fabric of the author's life, and showing how this can be done. Too many works on the experience just focus on the experience itself, without looking at the specific ways in which that experience can be integrated into one's broader understanding. The author (Pinchbeck) is very self-aware and very honest both with himself and therefore with the reader as well. So my conclusion is that it is not very helpful as an informational or reference work, but if you read it as a kind of autobiography that just happens to include psychadelic experiences it winds up being a lot more satisfying.

Well said, EchoVortex. I do feel his personal account of his experiences made the book interesting. I also like the fact , that he brought up a connection with Western Occultism and Ethnobotony that was neither widely excepted in each of these fields. Well thanks for the replies,
