Psychiatric Illness
    #12608973 -

There Are often claims that psychiatric illness is rife in our society, or that psychiatric illness does not exist at all.

Often people are misdiagnosed. But also there exist people with clear brain difficiencies that prevent them from behaving acceptably.

So this made me think, that the best way of thinking about psychiatric health diagnoses is as a behavioral abnormality. Someone has a psychiatric disorder if they have an inability to behave appropriately.

The psychological theory goes on to try to explain why they cant behave appropriately. The correct theory may or may not be applied to a person (eg they might be diagnosed ADD but not really have the root problem proposed by a psychiatrist, Or a person might be condemned as psychotic for having a non-normal approach to life). Classifying their innapropriate behavior can be more objectifiable than classifying its cause, by simply setting standards of appropriate behavior and comparing them to the behavior exhibited by a subject.

Although in psychology there exists behaviorist camps as distinct to other 'camps', all psychologists are behaviorists in a significant way. Psychiatrists can only detect the mental soundness of a person through their behaviors. So we should think of all mental diagnoses as stemming from behavioral abnormalities. What is said about why a person is not behaving properly becomes a theory based on the data. It might be real or not.

However the behavioral abnormality is real.

Oh I think it ties in with issues of whether it is right to label people by an illness or simply be the specific behavioral differences they show (if you are going to label them at all).

Anyone? Psychiatric illness is a pretty significant topic id say. But the substance is behavior. Physiological tests occur after the person has died.

The psychiatric labels are just a cluster of present behaviors and historical behaviors. You remove the label that clusters them and you're going to get a big long list, which doesn't really change anything. A person can carry a single label or a entire list of problem behaviors with 'em.

I'd rather get away from pinning it down at all, or at least significantly less. Behaviorally or otherwise.

I think the clustering is significant  because one term can be given to a wide variety of people each of who have a different specific profile but whos traits most closely match a given cluster.
But i guess it doesnt really make much of a difference in the end.

Psychiatry is an art as much as a science (some branches are more science, some branches are almost purely art - or hokum, depending on your point of view).  Part of the art is expanding the definitions of illness so as to increase your customer base and importance in the health care industry.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

So true, same for medicine in general.

I think when we get to the point where 50% of the population is diagnosed with "psychiatric disorders", then maybe people will start to realize that a lot of their problems are not individual "behavorial" disorders but "societal" disorders.  I don't know the percentage of people that are actually labelled with psychiatric disorders, but I know it has increased greatly from just a couple of generations ago.  I think this is due to culture lag.

From dictionary.com Culture lag – noun (Sociology)
slowness in the rate of change of one part of a culture in relation to another part, resulting in a maladjustment within society, as from the failure of the nonmaterial culture to keep abreast of developments in the material culture.

my own pet theory is that psychiatric illnesses fall into two(2) broad categories ..those that are caused by an agent that physically attacks the brain tissue.. and those which have been invented as an excuse to make money for private therapists..and/or to incarcerate and experiment on ppl that dont meet certain social criteria...

apart from those..the "abnormal" behaviours that are so prevalent are simply due to the fact that the human brain did not evolve to function efficiently in a calvinist society...

The only way they incarcerate you is if you are a threat to yourself or others.

Your last sentence is confusing. Physiological tests are performed all the time to determine potential, physical causes for behavior, before a person is dead. MRI's, for example. A lot of psychical diseases have documented effects on behavior and these tests are all performed before a person has died.

Anyways, yes, all psychiatric disorders are distinctions regarding behavior. The conceptions of these disorders are created and categorized accordingly to how they relate to behavior in society in general. Its a classification that is put in a basis of what behaviors are more common and which behaviors are more "functional" in societal terms, parameters as they appear to manifest in a society at a given point in time.
I think that these classifications can be useful enough in therapy, especially when they are used as a broad guiding tool for diagnostic purposes. They might help provide a background understanding of what a client can be going through, which might help with the actual process of discovering and learning from the client about the specific nature of their experiences, sentiments, and thought processes.

For the most part I strongly disagree with what seems to be a common psychiatric approach of actually divulging these diagnostic conclusions to the client, and its hard to conceive of how efficacious doing so is in terms of the actual therapeutic process, with the consideration that any potential gains from such a divulgence likely pale in comparison to more effective approaches.
Of course, I also disagree with most of the psychiatric approach to treating behavior in general, with the exception of using chemical catalysts in certain psychological approaches to conducting therapy, as temporary tools used in providing novel experiences to help provide new perspective and to resolve latent emotional content.

By psychiatric illness do you mean a derangement or abnormality of function, or a morbid physical or mental state?  Just because a chemical can influence behavior doesn't necessarily mean the cause of the behavior is physical.  True, organic, physical brain dysfunction is much rarer than abnormal behavior.  A person can exhibit all kinds of bizarre behaviors merely by not having enough sleep or a poor diet.

There are numerous factors regarding psychiatric or mental illness.

I will agree that psychology in general relies on behaviors and actions to determine diagnosis, but that's not the whole kit and kaboodle.

There's also family history, genetics, hormone levels.
As for the physiological testing-most good (I say "good" for a reason) psychiatrists or psychologists will send a patient for medical tests to determine the possible cause of any psychiatric ailment.

MRIs, PET scans, as well as EEGs are often implemented to determine if there's abnormal patterning or other possible issues regarding one's physiology.

Further, perhaps the single most mysterious psychiatric illness is still not well understood, and the community at large was hopeful a decade ago when the dopamine theory was prevalent for explaining schizophrenia. Now of course they feel it's also genetic

We should all remember that medicine as a whole, in its current iteration is only a century or so old and modern science a few centuries older than that.

Hm not really. These are factors but not primary causes, primary causes are what is occurring in the individuals soul or heart or mind - in perception.
