hitchhiking, traveling cross country
    #12533347 -

So im thinking about just kinda leaving where im at right now and following a band out to cali.
I live in cleveland and hear that Phish and Primus are going to be coming close by in the upcoming summer...
thats when Id make the move and follow one out west, but I really don't know anyone who has had much experience with this.

I know some friends who have followed Phish for about a year- but im hoping there are others on this forum who have had experience.

would anyone like to share? :hippie:

So out of 12 people, no one has hitch-hiked or traveled cross country...
but surely, someone has... right? :confused2:

I haven't found the balls to try it yet. I don't have any long term places to get you know?

Yeah.  One thing you can do is try couchsurfers.com.  I heard from a couple guys who used to do this all the time and they used that site for places to crash

I am planning on hitch hiking with my dog this summer.

Plan on going east, crossing into canada from maine, crossing canada, re-entering USA in Washington state, then making my way back home.

It'll be an adventure.  Hopefully I can manage it.

Learn to dumpster dive.  Bring a pot for cooking and perhaps a water filter and a water bottle, for filling up at gas stations or grocery stores or whatever.

Also a tarp and blanket/sleeping bag.

Salvation Army can give you fresh clothes when you need them.

Best of luck, home slice.

i have experience hitch-hiking

its amazing and i've never had any overly bad encounters, never been mugged, robbed, threatened or anything. the worst that has happened has just been wierd/crazy/awkward/rude people.

i highly recommend it.

its an eye opening experience, nothing else compares. it is the final remaining red blooded american adventure.

jumping on phish tour is a grand idea, you will have lots of fun.

enjoy life.

Do it - i highly recommend it, it will probably be one of the most defining experiences of your life.

I hitch hiked across Canada and to West Virginia for Rainbow nationals 04, then made it down to Florida and zigzagged riding freight trains to Seattle. Took about 2 months and i lived off $500 a couple kick downs from friendly rides + my rainbow parents.

I've done several other trips of a similar nature since..

Don't take too much! 1 pair of pants, 1 pair of shorts, long johns top and bottom, few pairs of wool socks, good footwear, sleeping bag, knife, HEADLAMP. a 40-50L pack should be fine... I prefer having a backpacking stove, so i can cook breakfast on cold mornings.

A tarp is fine, but a tent is nice. If you are out to buy one - i would highly recommend a backpacking hammock/tarp combo rather than a tent.

I've had some sketchy rides, and slept in sketchy places. Had a black man try and pick me up in Toronto... had a trucker peeking in a bathroom stall at me when i was shitting somewhere in the eastern US, and a dude followed me out of a library in Tennessee and asked me to drink beer and watch porn with him...

COCKROACHES and giant centipedes make sleeping on the ground in Florida a horrible experience!

GO OUTSIDE.
