Can't fire you for that I don't think.  Pretty sure that's illegal (in Canada anyways, I think you guys have similar laws down there).

Working at a wine bar tells me you work with uptight assholes, or at the very least the customers are uptight.  This one sucks, I've always seen this situation work out one of two ways.  Either you wear long sleeves constantly or you're one false move away from being fired.  Yuppies are the fuckin worst to be dealing with.

lol "wine bar"

people who patron wine-bars have always struck me as elitist (not to judge/degrade, these are some of my friends), and IME elitist wine drinkers don't like tattoos

if I owned a wine-bar I'd want as many high-dollar winos in my bar as possible

so if I owned the place  I'd make you cover your tattoo

different states may vary but I think for the most part they absolutely can tell you to cover it up.

its the boss's choice, and if you're tat doesn't fit their "uniform", well....

I don't think you can be fired for having a tat, but I don't think its even remotely illegal to ask to have it covered up.

I've been in restaurants for a long time, and almost every single nationwide corporate chain makes servers cover up tats. I know for a fact that Outback, Longhorn, and Texas Roadhouse do (having worked at all three) and I think that applebees does as well IIRC. Chili's does not.

You get unemployment if they fire you and also can sue for discrimination. That said, you might just want to cover it up unless you hate your job.

I have two very small tattoos of religious scriptures written in ancient texts on my wrists. my manager has a blood star tattooed on his forearm. first day of work, he told me to cover my tats. I look at his very blatantly, and said, yes sir. and I have never covered them. And they have never said anything about it again

like I said, different areas may have different laws, but where I live (FL) and MD, that is absolutely not true.
discrimination has to do with race, gender, religious afiliation, sexual orientation, living arrangement (single, married, etc), age, or disability (assuming that it doesn't keep you from performing the job in question) but freedom of expression is not covered under discrimination.

also remember, you give up a lot of rights when it comes to employment, obviously you no longer have freedom of speech/expression (you can't just tell your boss to go fuck himself without fear of getting fired)

if you're that concerned about it, contact a labor lawyer thats local and ask them.

it's a neighborhood wine bar in NYC, and i guarantee no one would be offended by my tatt.  i've had it for almost a year and some of my friends don't even know i have it!  it's on my inner left bicep which i think is sort of inconspicuous.

not to mention the fact that i plan on getting more!!  then what?

This is why I made sure to only get tattoos that could be easily concealed with a T-shirt.

talk to the owner, if he's not the one who told you to cover it he may just say screw that other guy.
if he is, just present your argument to him in a non-aggressive way.
BTW i'm fairly sure NYC doesn't give you much protection at all as far as employment laws are concerned. If you'd like I can ask my sis. she's an attorney in NYC. not really her specialty but I'm sure she knows the answer, this sounds like (to me at least) a fairly easy law to interpret.

ditto.
I have one on my calf, but the way I see it, if I work somewhere that allows me to wear shorts, they're not gonna care about a tattoo being exposed.

absolutely not. but unfortunately there still exists a stigma about tattoo's.  most people that have them don't think anything less of seeing people with them. but some people (mainly baby boomer generation and older) DO think less of somebody for having tat's. especially visible ones.
and unfortunately, that baby boomer generation tends to be the ones in charge right now at most jobs. LOL

My girlfriend has a sleeve and if she needs to hide it for a job she can and does with very little difficulty.  I guess she got used to that sort of shit.

I can't imagine working at a bar that would give a damn about a tattoo like yours, I saw it in one of your photos, definitely not something I would consider "conspicuous".

9 out of 10 times the customers dont get offended by a tattoo, in fact it
usually leads to more enjoyment, managers that ask for them to be concealed
dont want to lose the 10% of church going drunks that would be offended and
never tip anyway... go figure

YB... if you like the job, do as the boss says, if not, tell him to fuck
off and find another job where the boss is more accepting of adornment
