absolutely not. but unfortunately there still exists a stigma about tattoo's.  most people that have them don't think anything less of seeing people with them. but some people (mainly baby boomer generation and older) DO think less of somebody for having tat's. especially visible ones.
and unfortunately, that baby boomer generation tends to be the ones in charge right now at most jobs. LOL

It's very simple. If they said you had to color your face white because you are too dark skinned that would be wrong. If they told you keep your face shaved for image, that's fine. It's not discrimination if you did it to your self. Your tattoos are your choice to get and they can flat out fire you for even having them. That or just not hire you for it.

Damn, that is lame...you'd think a bar, even a wine bar, wouldn't be so uptight about. Plus...your tattoo is so damn..*tasteful!* It's pretty, a cool color, DOESN'T SCREAM, and is in a pretty tucked away spot.  Nothing really unsavory about it...

Unfortunately I think everyone who said "either cover it and get paid or get a new job" pretty much has it right...and I think your decision depends a lot on how much you are liking the job.

When I got a molecule tattooed on my forearm I knew I was probably screwing myself out of some future employment possibilities...however, I also knew I wouldn't want to work any place that wouldn't hire me on such a silly basis.

see.

this is how i felt when i got it too.  and i plan on getting more.  i guess she didn't see my tattoo until last night because i took my sweater off cuz it started to get really hot.

i pulled her aside and asked her what the reasoning was.

we had a discussion about it, and she explained to me that it was just as much about her wanting the staff to look modest (i was wearing a tank top underneath my sweater) as it was about not showing my tattoo.  she said the girl i was hired to replace had her whole back up to the back of her neck done and she'd asked her to cover it up, so if she lets me show mine it wouldn't be fair.  i dunno, im trying to decide if this job is worth it.

you may think im a brat, but i don't like being discriminated because i choose to have ink on my body.  for me it's on par with peeing in a cup and i wouldn't take a job that made me do that either.

when i talked to my boss last night i told her straight up, i don't think i can work in a place that makes me hide my tattoo, and that if i'd known that before she hired me i probably wouldn't have taken the job.  the good thing is she's pretty chill and we had an open discussion about it without either of us losing our cool, so i guess i'll see.

This is true. I really do need to go find work that is less corporate. Sadly those jobs get fewer and fewer as the corporations take over everything. I'm sure I can find something out there that are more on my terms and I will be happier for it. My last job was great until the economy took a nose dive. The owner thought he would come in and play nazi to everyone and go super cooperate in a place that had a smoke out room and everyone dressed how they wanted. Everyone quit or got fired pretty quick and he isn't making any more money than he was before. What a way to ruin a fun job.

I dont understand that kind of reasoning, it's as simple as wearing a shirt
with longer sleeves or applying a little pan stick, if you enjoy the job,
judging by the thread you do, then it's really not much of an issue, it's
not like covering it is removing it for good

of course I dont see why she wouldnt find the tank top as an issue
either of she's looking for modesty

you have to make the decision of whats more important. where do your priorities lie and how strongly do you feel about your beliefs.

look, i'm all for people being able to expose tattoos. I like them, have several myself.  but at the same time when it comes to getting my bills paid, its yes sir, yes ma'am.  I mean, I don't feel like its morally wrong to have to cover them, I don't feel like I'm being discriminated against.  The employer decides the business image, not me.  But if you feel this strongly about it then quit.
its all about where your priorities lie.

the point is i am the same human being performing a job (quite well i might add) whether my tattoo is visible or not, and that i wouldn't have accepted the job in the first place if she had told me this in the interview.

Nice approach in talking to the boss in a relaxed way.  Hopefully you can relax them about it, or hide it until you find something else that isn't so uptight about something so silly, especially in that line of work.

Hey if he want's all of his employees unhappy and pissed off it's his business. All I know is I'm happy I don't work there anymore. He fucked me over and broke the law so I get money from him every month because of it. It is his business and he can do whatever he wants with it. It's just sad that such a fun place to work was killed. I'd kill for another laid back place to work. He use to have 2 stores but he managed the shit out of the first one to the ground. We were still goin stronger than ever but he felt the need to come in and ruin a really good thing. Now he can't keep employees over the age of 18. I was amazed how much shit a bunch of 16 year old high school kids would take from him. They don't work for shit, but they sure can shrug off a raging boss that abuses the shit out of them. Hey it's his place for now, hopefully he manages that one to the ground to. I wouldn't mind buying it and returning it to it's former glory.

That's some horse shit right there. I seem to remember seeing a pic of your tat and it is a very modest tattoo that's kinda hard to spot. I can't believe they are making a big stink out of that.

It's surprising that in a city as progressive as NYC that they'd even care about tattoos. If the place in the Financial District or SoHo I MIGHT be able to see them asking you to do that, but I think it's crap none the less.

You could always cover it up with make up pretty easily if it really becomes an issue.

I dunno if this makes a difference or not but the education level required to manage a franchise is usually pretty low.

I've seen way too many mouth-breathers get into corporate management positions just by being the favorite bag boy for five years.

Except for my old butcher boss. He started with his own slaughterhouse and everything. He was pretty bad at managing in Foodland but he actually had mad skillz.

What does a tattoo have to do with being unique? I get my tattoos for myself and no one else and don't really care what others think. You come off as so ignorant

Right. We get it. Non-conformist. Don't care what other people think. et cetera ad nauseam

You come off as a snob :superiority: But that's neither here nor there.

Is a person's tattoo, which is different from every other tattoo AND, in practice, contrary to the mores of the dominant culture, not by definition "unique"?
