I have a suggestion for The Ethnobotanical Garden

I, as well as others in the EG, feel that we should have our own "Plant and Seed Trading Marketplace" as an actual sub-forum of the EG... We are always wanting to trade with fellow EGers and posting in the Marketplace to do this is completely inefficient, as most of the people who frequent the EG seldom check the Marketplace at all...

Of course the same rules would apply, nothing illegal, fair trade ratings, etc....

I dont honestly understand why others lack of insistence to check the marketplace warrants the admins creating a new forum.

There is talk of adding sub-categories to the MP in order to help sort through and organize it, which should be easy to implement.

But I really don't think the EG should have a separate forum for such a thing, as the marketplace already exists.

Why do you think the marketplace is not accessed more frequently by EG memebers?

If it's because organization, there is talk about organizing it.

If it's because of the post/registration restrictions, they wouldn't be any different.

Try to figure out why they don't trade in there and get back to us though, as that would give more weight to your suggestion and so that the appropriate thing can be done.

If you have something to trade use the EG Mailing list to get the word out to the regular EGer's. I think that's a more effective way of letting the hardcore plantheads know.

I can't speak for other members of the EG, but I check the marketplace a lot.

I've brought this idea up before. It more or less got shot down.


Maybe having a stickied thread where people can post and update plant/seed lists that are available for trade. No actual trade talk would be allowed in the thread, but everyone would get the hint. We could even call it something else. Everyone would know it is a classified page, but we never call it that.

If deals are worked out through PMs, and there is no mention in the thread that the lists are items up for trade, I don't think it would technically be breaking any rules.

But yeah, I think most of us would get by if people used the mailing list more often, and the marketplace was slightly better orginized.  Although I have to add, I really haven't found it difficult to obtain nearly every plant I could want from members of the EG.

I also browse the marketplace a lot, prob more then the EG these days. Dan does an awesome job at moderating the Market as well as the EG btw.

In saying that trading is freely done in the Mush Cult forum and is completly restricted in the EG forum so I know where mal is coming from. A bit of consistancy would go along way.

It wouldn't be too difficult to add in a sticky that people seeking trades go to the Marketplace and a small disclaimer about legality.

:shrug:

Easy solution if there's a constant Coasterish poasting of requests for trades and trade lists.

It was just a suggestion... W_S seemed to think it was a great idea and he told me if he could find support for it he was going to implement it. I don't see how it would hurt anything...

You know I like you as a poster and hope you know I mean nothing negative or against you by my posts but...

I really don't feel that because other are too lazy to check the marketplace or post there that another forum should be created.

I think if the MP was organized into searchable sub-categories it may act as nearly the same thing.

What were your thoughts on who would be let in and again, give me some reasons why no one posts in the MP now so that we can effectively change the current situation.

All I keep thinking about is the countless noobs that come into the EG expecting to be hand fed free seeds, plants, and supplies (see Salvia marketplace)

Not only that but there will be an influx of people wanting to trade illegal items and possibly putting our members in harms way (the law).

I agree with these two statements. We don't need a trade sub category in the EG IMO, the marketplace exists for this purpose. If it was implemented it would just be a clusterfuck for the current Mods. People can't be bothered even reading the rules these days, imagine how frustrated they would be once a trade sub category was created.


I come to the EG for plant news, discussion with like-minded people, plant pron and to help fellow growers if I can, I would hate to see it turn into bunch of "I want/need" posts, it would probably drive me elsewhere. If I want to trade I go to the marketplace. Why can't others do the same? Are newer members that lazy these days.

I didn't really see it as a matter of laziness... The way I see it the Marketplace has been overrun by a bunch of trading/bargaining gypsy's who have turned it into a garage sale of sorts... I just thought it would look much more nice and clean if people were trading plants/seeds in a place intended for only plants and seeds.

I didn't think it would cause a clusterfuck because it would be a separate sub-forum... No one would trade illegal items any more than they already try to, because as suggested, it would of course be the same rules as the marketplace.

I guess it's decided then, no big deal guys... Searchable subcategories sounds great, as long as we have a Seeds/Plants section! :thumbup: :wink:

I do support the idea of a plant trade sub category in the marketplace but I feel mixing it into the EG would cause more problems than it's worth. Again this comes down to members not reading or blatantly disregarding the rules in the first place. No amount of stickies will fix this.

If we moved it to the EG, we may as well get rid of the entire marketplace as almost everything could be put into one of the other forums, but that's impractical.

And on subcategories, I'll see that there is a push to get it done :awethumb:
