With many of the spore vendors going out of business, I think it is only fair to take the ban off private member selling spores. It gives many people cheaper ways to get spores and will only do good to create some badly needed competition (price-wise) withing the vendors. I have nothing but love for Ralphster, Ryche, Boxtop (RIP), etc; but I think it is only fair to consider this idea. I know the admin doesn't like the idea of money being slinged all around, but when you think of it, sending money for a spore syringe is no different that sending money for a book or a dvd.

Please consider my idea, but vendors, don't take it personally. It is not an attack on anyone.

I'm sorry. I should have thought a little more before I typed. There aren't many that are out of business, but there are a few major ones that are going to be. I didn't mean to start problems, just giving an idea for the admin to think about. If you don't like the idea, that's your decision, that's why you're admin :smile:

Redstorm, I can understand your position, I'm hoping this isn't the beginning of the end of what are really all great vendors, supplying us with the means to partake of something truly special, i.e., microscopy research. TLG closing up so suddenly freaks me out, as he went from his back from vacation dark days syringes to closing up shop in just a couple weeks - really pretty unexpected, huh? Don't get me wrong, though, as everyone else I'm sure is, I'm very grateful for all the work and help they all offer, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to do a little business with anyone willing to be such an asset to those of us interested in microscopy.

I in no way have anything againsts the vendors. The vendors that post on out community are all both wonderful people and extraordinary business-people. I've ordered from them several times, without a complaint. I was just thinking that it may be good for the community to allow members to sell spores.

You make a valid point Anno. I'm sure it would take some business from the vendors, but there are many things that would still draw a majority of the customers to vendors:

1. Guaranteed Sterility
2. Better Reputation
3. Quicker Shipping (probably)

Those things can all be dealt with by buying only from members that are well spoke of and who are trustworthy. I know I'm fighting a losing arguement here, and I'm not a well-known character around here who people may listen to more, but I just want people to look at it open-minded. I would love to hear what the vendors have to say on this issue.

I would really like to thank Anno for giving me another side of this issue to think about!

I'd like to start by saying that i've been hanging around this site for years, even though i just recently started posting as BrainFarmer.  I know i'm gonna take a lot of heat for this post, but i've been biting my tongue on this issue for quite some time now...

First of all, I've purchased spores from several vendors and have, for the most part (fuck TSH!) been pleased with my experiences.  By selling guaranteed clean, viable syringes vendors provide a gateway for newbies to get started with little know how.  Commercial vendors ARE vital; I certainly wouldn't be here without PF.

Having said that, I think its also important to keep in mind that most of these vendors are millionaire capitalists.  With their incessant bickering, sabatoge campaigns, and "Spore Wars," these vendors have made it painfully clear that they care more about sales than spores.  The most recent examples of such behavior are Sporebank's domain name scam, and the industry wide price hikes "justified" by the PF bust.  So... why not let spores be sold by people who are in it for the right reasons?

This is an organization, a community - not a shopping mall.  If money is really that tight around here you could "sell" permits to private users who wish to offer spores for a reasonable price in the marketplace.  Or you could have an annual or biannual raffle, like the one that paid for the server.  I'd buy tickets every time.  I'd even donate prizes.

I guess what i'm trying to say is, this is the shroomery.ORG, not shroomery.com.  and that's the way i like it.

of course shroomery.com is registered, but the page i'm looking at says "shroomery.org bulletin boards" at the top and there's a hyperlink that reads "shroomery.org" in the lower right hand corner. all admin/mod e-mail addresses are @shroomery.org. this is the shroomery.org, silly!

isn't that the original intent behind the different extentions? .com = commercial, .gov= government, .org = nonprofit, .edu = educational? sure, there's no law that says that this is how it goes, but i'm pretty sure this is how it's supposed to work...
