Chances are
A) they will use your signature and any other info you provide to steal your identity.
B) Its a mailing list and by replying your agreeing to allow them you sell your Name and Address to junk/bulk mailer.
Or
C) It's a lead in to a larger scam.

a: I thought that same thing, but there's not much you can do with JUST a signature and address.  I mean anybody can forge a signature and claim it as their own to steal an identity (unless they somehow pilfered bank account info, or checks; in which case, why send me this letter)
b) this is my main suspicion, but why run it out of australia? one would expect more responses doing it domestically just because people wouldn't respond due to cost of postage.
c) this is the most logical explanation. a long con, they're going to set me up, draw me in, make me think I really won and then either get acct info (from the wire deposit), or ask for funds from me or something

seriously? it took that many replies before somebody thought to mention this?? LOL

any aus people wanna help a brother out and give them a call and see whats up?

to add even more mystery:
the return address from the envelope (the one that the letter came in, not the response envelope inside) is "SIM 60086; P.O. BOX 2000-1; TAIPAI, TAIWAN, R.O.C."

but what is it? lol, the only logical explanation I can think of, other than being the bait for a bigger scam, is that its to register for market research and its basically a lottery for all who register to win that 5k. similar to how you enter for a chance to win a car at the mall but then you get bombarded with junk mail for the next 27 years.

but its like $5 to mail to aus. fuckkkk that!

trampis: just out of curiosity, are you anywhere near central FL? maybe this has been marketed to a particular region...

Read the rules in the fine print on the back.

By signing and returning the ticket, you are agreeing to something.  You need to figure out what it is.  It'll be listed in the "rules" on the back.

They are counting on you NOT reading the rules.

those emails from nigerian princes ask for money though. this just asks for something to be returned that they already gave me.  I don't think this is legit, but I'm not completely convinced its a scam either.  Probably spam.

maybe I'm missing something. the following is transcribed from the "rules" on the back.  notice the except residents of FL which is where i live.  Trampis: did your's say the state you live in? or FL?  BTW, I have tried to keep the same punctuation and capital letters as the "rules"

still totally confused as to what this actually is.  It seems like this would not get the most responses ever if it was just to add your name to a spam mail list.  On that same notion, they already have my name and address so couldn't they just be spamming me already? if that is what it is.

this guy has never posted anything with content. the name fits quite well.

as to your question, nobody wins 5k for doing nothing, and by giving them seemingly trivial information about yourself, you're setting yourself up to be scammed/id stolen. i would trash the letter if i were you.

yes, yes. I plan on trashing the letter. I have a very analytical mind though and really want to at least figure out what it is before I trash it.
even when i posted this thread, I knew I hadn't actually won money.

I mean the nigerian schemes and stuff are pretty easy to see through.  This (assuming it is a scam) seems to me that it would likely get a larger percentage of responses than those nigerian schemes.  But what is the MO. just string people along while trying to get info.

The verification of age SOUNDS legit, as it should. Is that their way of getting more personal info? one can run a credit report with just a name, address, and birthdate....  They can't find out much more info, such as account number, social, etc, but its a start.  IDK this seems like a lot of work to go through to steal somebody's ID but maybe thats the brilliance of it. people are more likely to give small bits of info over time than they are to give large info all at once.
