Did I win 5k or is it a scam?
    #12445071 -

I know, I know, usually when you ask that, its a scam. BUT I can't figure out how, unless they're trying to get me for a stamp?!?!

I got a letter in the mail. Telling me that I have won $5000. All I have to do is fill out the form at the bottom and mail it back. Not send any money, not do anything like that, just fill out a form.  The form has 2 options. One says I wish to claim the check. The other says I wish to have the check delivered and then my address.  There is also the question titled "puzzle" the question says "Circle the correct answer. 20 + 5 = 25 21 23"

On the back, I just discovered are rules.  They won't scan.
Thats it. nothing else. it talks about this being a game of skill and chance to determine the final winner.  It says I must respond by dec 31, 2010. And that the game is not eligible in several states (including FL, DOH! but I will probably not be living here in Dec so.....)

I am sure this is not legit but can't figure out a logical reason not to respond.

The self addressed envelope included in the mail is addressed to australia, and does not have postage, so the only expense it would cost for me to respond would be postage....???

PIC of letter:

It might not be a scam, but you sure as hell didn't win $5,000.

its snail mail.

Thats what I don't get.  I mean, the worst I would be doing would be verifying my name and address? the fact that there's rules on the back of the page (in that color that won't scan that they usually use on checks)

also there is a name on the back "windsor-morgan and parker, po box 4805. robina town centre qld 4230 australia"

nasty - my thoughts exactly, but I just can't figure out what they are trying to scam out of me? maybe they collect stams and want my cancelled postage for free? IDK

moronicus -  really good, informative, full of content reply right there. +1 to your post count sir! (btw, just in case it goes over your head, that was sarcasm)

kinda my thoughts, I don't think its a scam, but I do wanna know wtf it is anyways.

as for the grammer, its not as bad as most scam emails, and most of it can be attributed to different dialect.  The language is proper, just not our americanized dialect (which would be right on point since it did come from australia)

for all repliers
EDIT: read the scanned letter, what are they trying to scam me out of?!?!

please, read what has been posted before you facepalm me. ITS SNAIL MAIL. now, I don't have a degree in compsci or anything, but I'm pretty sure there's no possible way to get an IP from snail mail.  not email. snail mail. United States Postal Service. once again, since the first two time you weren't able to deduce it. THERE IS NO ELECTRONIC MAIL involved.  capiche?

if I totally misinterpreted your response, and the facepalm was for the RP then my apologies.

besides, I'm not worried about trojans. I am behind a good firewall, and have the proper protection in addition to being on a mac, so: 72.189.189.197  that's my ip. bring it.

I live in Robina - well, actually, Robina Island to be precise. My part of town certainly isn't a shithole, however I will admit that certain areas of the suburb can be a bit shady. Compared to other parts of town like Palm Beach or Labrador, Robina is somewhat glamorous. The town centre is a five minute drive from my place.

Where do you hail from?

I hail from USA, which only confuses me more as to what exactly this letter I received is. I googled the company name, and all I can find is that I'm not the only one who got this.
From what I could piece together, I think this is a marketing company, and I'd be registering to be part of "opinion based research". Not sure exactly what that means, or how its a "game of skill" to win the supposed 5k.

maybe I should respond, maybe its to be a part of some reality show or something and thats the game of skill. LOL

edit: in that link posted, all they say is basically the same thing I did "what is this" one person said they were asked to send in $12.99 to claim the prize. one person did bring up a good point though, the return form does ask for my signature. Not sure what exactly somebody could do in australia with my signature, but they do bring up a very good point of that being on there.

I'm from Redcliffe way, so I don't know if I can really talk about shithole suburbs :vaped:

Only been to Robina 3 times in my life and all 3 times are associated with a really shitty memory, so I can't help but hate on it :sherlock:

just to add one more

wait wait wait, so what's OP? I thought OP was original post and RP was reply-post?

as for if you have to ask: I brought up the same exact point, in fact, I opened my post with that comment. but usually you can figure out what they are trying to scam you for.  in this incident, the only thing they asked for me to send them was my signature (kinda weird, but honestly, just having a person's signature and address, there's not much you can do), and a piece of paper that they supplied. they supplied the envelope even, just no stamp. so I repeat. where's the scam?

I'm not denying that I didn't win 5k. but I figure this letter has to serve some kind of purpose, either its part of a long con (maybe, doubtful), or something. IDK but it is clear that its not one of the nigerian prince scams. or the over-pay for a car scam, or any number of other scams I've seen or read about.

I want to know what the scam is.  Maybe they will accidentally send you a 10K check and ask you to return the difference before the check bounces.
