honestly though, i think that if i were to write a tek for noobs, it would have to include everything.  it would be all the explanation for how everything works, and pf tek basics, shotgun terrariums, then say benefits/differences of monotubs and other bulk.

basically, we need everything to be in one place.  i know that's the shroomery and all, but if there were a wikipedia-type all about mushroom cultivation, we all could add to it, and there would be things advanced growers could learn from, too.

navigation

when I first started I had a hard time finding where to go first without some research. and even then U dont know what to search for because u know nothing about anything.

the posts about starting out are what people find when they search about starting out. Yet everytime someone makes a post trying to find where to start, people get pissed off.

just make a damn sticky that says something like

*if you are interested in growing mushrooms for your first time we recomend u research the following* and mention the PF Tek then list a couple of things about it and compare it to other methods. also mention studying the science because that will ultimately send a beginner in the right direction

same with hunting and identification- those stickies you have now have too much info in them. like that other guy mentioned keep it simple. if u want to hunt, take pictures, describe the habitat, and what it looks like and youll be good. dont ask where to hunt, and dont make schedules to meet.

its short so people will read it

I think what would make more sense would be to just revamp the site's 'grow mushrooms' tab info content. a lot of it is outdated and most of it is just text which is harder for noobs. But a noob forum would be good as well so that more complicated issues can be delt with in cultivation and not get bogged down with all the obvious answer questions.

definitely either need some sort of comprehensive guide or stickies for broad topics with very specific details within.

You shouldn't revamp anything.  +1

a basic glossary or definition resource would be good I think.  People still get confused about what a casing is versus a bulk substrate, as one example.

Ythan, this is an awesome idea! :awesomenod:

Let's see... A video tutorial on how to use the search engine, along with detailed instructions on the search engine in a variety of formats. Maybe some notices: no asking for drugs, hookups, girlfriends, warez. No flaming on most forums. No puppet accounts, no spam. No trading for drugs, no asking about RC suppliers. No one under aged allowed. Yes, LSD is still being commonly sold, just because you can't get it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Information about the places they can't access yet("This post will be the official post for people to trade things!") and the requirements for access. A notice that the main site contains a lot of outdated and worthless information that shouldn't be followed. A link for dose and effect information to erowid. A notice that these forums are for more than just psychedelic mushrooms. Maybe some links to the common HUGE threads, like the naked woman thread or the suggested music thread. Also, maybe a good english dictionary? Seems like a lot of people need it. That's all I can think of right now.

tek on how to take decent photos (macro button, distance, stabilisation, indirect lighting, focus points, etc)

a page with 'dumb shit people have already asked x1000' including 'can mushrooms grow hydroponically?' 'can i cross-breed mushroom strains by making them 69 each other?' 'what if i added DMT to my substrate' etc

and that chart RR posted ages ago about the nutritional composition/requirements of mycelium, so people can compare that to their magical new substrate and see if its worth asking questions about

I find the noobs are completely unable to navigate the cultivation info to get at the teks.

i.e. click mushroom info-->grow mushrooms-->...

Maybe there should be a better faq section. Would be cool if they could just type their question and got back a list of related freq asked questions.

There could be a great big box right on the front page, ASK CULTIVATION QUESTIONS HERE!

include even the stupidest questions, i.e.

HOW CAN I GROW X POUNDS OF MUSHROOMS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE?

1. learn the basic procedure for growing mushrooms from brown rice flour. This is called the PF TEK.
2. learn to make grain spawn. make some.
3. learn how to turn your spawn into a bulk substrate.
4. Grow x pounds of mushrooms.

I can see a 'practice' forum for new users. Here they could make posts (without a post count), get used to using the BB functions, practice replying, attaching files, uploading pictures, quoting, etc. and learn basic netiquette. Here they can get feedback and suggestions prior to making 'real' posts.

We could also give them practice runs using the search engines by giving them fun assignments to find particular information on the site and forums.

We do have abundant teks, faqs, tutorials, stickies, logs, and some of the links are outdated or missing. We could compile the best of the best which would be available for download or presented to new users.

I would suggest a short "What to do after the spore syringe arrives" factsheet which may avoid many repetitive questions.

Trying to get new people to follow hunting forum rules related to ID requests is like trying to reverse the flow of a stream with a canoe paddle.  Yes, we have rules.  No, they will not be followed.  Bitching about it is preaching to the choir.  You can not teach people who have never been to the site anything.

If the picture is clear its pretty easy to see what it is.  That is about the best we can hope for...
